Daria Werbowy Looks ‘Effortless’ On WSJ’s September Cover (Forum Buzz)

Daria Werbowy has knocked it out of the park once more. The Lancôme beauty stars on The Wall Street Journal‘s all-important September 2014 issue, which is due out August 16. Captured by Josh Olins, Daria is shot against a studio backdrop and is styled in a modern 70s-inspired look by Alastair McKimm, wearing a mixture of Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Daria and Josh have previously collaborated on Mango‘s Fall 2014 advertising campaign.

It’s no wonder members of our forums are head-over-heels for WSJ‘s latest cover. “Love love love it!!! Everything is working for me! Werk it Daria!!!” enthused fashionlover2001.

“Such a kick *** cover! Cool, effortless, classy, confident. Truly stunning!” wrote congacon.

Bertrando3 agreed: “Daria looking incredibly chic and gorgeous (note the return of fur) on the cover of The Wall Street Journal is really nice.”

MyNameIs appreciated seeing Daria in different styling and wrote, “Daria looks amazing. I love that they’ve styled her like this instead of that usual casual/hobo/rock/unwashed style they usually put her in.”

“Agreed, it’s nice to see a more polished version of her compared to the rocker thing you mentioned, or the raw and messy haired version we also frequently see of her. This is lovely,” replied HeatherAnne.

“This cover shot is a perfect example of Daria’s versatility and why she’s one of the highest paid and most sought-after models working right now,” complimented lelaid.

Alexander Wang’s Fall 2014 Campaign Proves We’re Watching Too Much OITNB (Forum Buzz)

Maybe Saginaw County, Michigan Sheriff William Federspiel was onto something when he blamed Orange Is the New Black for making orange prison jumpsuits in vogue. It seems the prison chic bug has also bit Alexander Wang. The label released its Fall 2014 campaign, and the concept is all about jail. Wang tapped Steven Klein to lens a series of images featuring Anna Ewers, Vanessa Moody, Lexi Boling, Kat Hessen and Katlin Aas posing through a prison-like window — so yeah, maybe we are a little obsessed with the Netflix series…

But we wouldn’t have it any other way. The campaign also seems to be a hit with our forum members, who are pretty much gushing over Wang’s latest.

Wang and Klein hit it out of the ballpark once again,” wrote Melancholybaby. “Happy to see Anna return after last season too. The concept will do wonders for the collection.” 

LRlovesDaria called it a “spectacular campaign,” while anlabe32 called it “sublime.”

Even Fiercification seemed to like the ad in spite of his reservations: “Anna is stellar here…I feel we’ve seen this theme from Meisel/Alex White before a few years ago in that W ed and Klein’s images are still over-saturated, but those quibbles aside, I really like these images; particularly the second.”

Vitamine W, however, wasn’t as impressed as the rest: “Excuse me, if one quasi subversive theme is beaten to death by the fashion click [sic] it’s prisons, schools, fences and cellblocks. I’m truly disappointed by the lack of imagination by team Klein and worse by ‘creative’ director Pascal Dangin. The pictures are technically decent, Anna looks great but it’s not working for me, this pseudo bad girl vibe, again. Besides that, I wish Vanessa would have taken the star role and other models from the superbly casted show would have rounded off the cast, but this bunch is just a poor selection.”

“Jail? Looks a bit more like schoolgirl detention to me,” offered a confused lucy92.

Vogue Spain’s August Cover Leaves Our Forum Members Puzzled (Forum Buzz)

A thread has been active for Vogue Spain’s August issue for a week now, and at first our forum members couldn’t figure out who the cover star was. It turns out she’s Spanish actress Blanca Suárez, photographed by Giampaolo Sgura wearing a white feathered ensemble by Chanel, which was styled by Sara Fernandez. Shot on location surrounded by luscious gardens, Blanca is also seen for a series of photos inside the magazine where she appears to be channeling Jane Birkin — or is that just me?

“I don’t know who she is, but it’s a lovely cover, I like the text placement,” wrote KateTheGreatest.

“Who is she?” questioned fashionlover2001.

Forum member Zhanna came to everyone’s rescue and informed us: “She’s a popular actress in Spain. Best known for two TV series and actually is one of the ‘Almodovar girls’ (The Skin I Live In/La Piel Que Habitó/ and I’m So Excited!/Los Amantes Pasajeros). Blanca also is now the face of Intimissimi.” She went on to add, “I don’t think she’s the right choice for a Vogue cover. She’s not Penélope. Only famous in Spain.”

“Average run of the mill kind of cover. There’s not really much else to say,” commented Abracadabra.

Oxymore was left underwhelmed as well and wrote, “That could have been a great cover but it’s just the expression on her face that is kind of weird. As always, I’m sure there will be a better picture in the cover story that would have made a better cover. And she reminds me of Jessica Biel with the bang.”

Flashback: UK Harper’s Bazaar May 2008 with Liya Kebede

It’s another random back issue I’ve selected for this week’s fashion flashback. The reason I decided to take a look back at the British edition of Harper’s Bazaar is because theFashionSpot forum members are divided in their opinion regarding the direction of today’s Bazaar. Justine Picardie is the current editor-in-chief of the magazine, who took over for Lucy Yeomans in 2013. Picardie’s take is very relaxed and mature with a hint of country. Yeomans’ was glamorous and oozed a sophisticated sexiness — a real difference between the two editors’ styles.

The May 2008 issue of UK Harper’s Bazaar has Liya Kebede on the front cover. Photographed by Alexei Hay, Liya poses against a soft, pale pink backdrop wearing a chiffon dress from Chanel Couture. It’s no wonder, with styling from Alison Edmond, hair cared for by Jimo Salako and makeup applied by Mary Jane Frost, the cover was a hit with forum members.

Above is a scan of the subscriber’s cover. The same cover shot was used for the newsstand edition as well (just with different fonts and text).

Not only did Liya appear on the front cover of the British glossy, the Ethiopian model was also shot for a fashion story. She poses once more for Alexei in a series of images projecting spring’s soft, slouchy tailoring, which offered a new freedom with a hint of louche exoticism at the time. Swedish model Elsa Sylvan is also inside the 236-page issue showcasing 50s-inspired eveningwear from the likes of Prada, Louis Vuitton, Escada, Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. John Lindquist photographs Elena Melnik donning monochrome, long and sharp silhouettes of the season, with styling from Vanessa Coyle.

PETA Slams More Australian Retailers for Using Angora Fur

PETA doesn’t just hate Sportsgirl for its use of angora fur, the animal-friendly folk are now slamming other top Australian retailers for using the wool of angora rabbits, too. The Just Group, which owns a chunk of popular Australian chain stores, including Portmans, Just Jeans, Dotti and Jay Jays, are next on PETA’s ever-growing chopping block.

Although other Australian retailers and designers like David Jones, Myer, George Wu and Alexi Freeman have all promised to not use wool from angora rabbits, The Just Group told PETA it won’t be joining the pledge and will continue to sell items made from angora fur.

Over on the PETA Australia site, the organisation is encouraging all to take action by writing to The Just Group’s Executive, Colette Garnsey. If you’re not sure what to tell the lady, that’s all good, because PETA has prepared the letter for you. It starts off like this:

“Dear Ms Garnsey, I was shocked to hear that Just Group has failed to join other Australian retailers and designers who have pledged not to use angora wool and angora blends in their clothing lines.”

After a couple more detailed sentences of the horrific process the rabbits endure to produce the fur, the letter wraps up, ending with, “Please take immediate action to introduce a policy banning this cruelly produced wool.”

Would You Watch a TV Show About Fashion Bloggers?

Fashion bloggers really are all the rage right now, and now they’ve been handed their very own half-hour reality TV show. The Style Network is tapping our top Australian social media queens, going behind-the-scenes of their wonderful and in-demand lives.

We’re hoping the show will answer all our fashion blogging related questions, like how they make money from this career, whether or not their clothes are freebies and who the debatably lucky person is taking all their glamourous shots.

With the likes of Sara Donaldson of Harper & Harley, Amanda Shadforth of Oracle Fox, Kate Waterhouse of Kate Waterhouse, Margaret Zhang of Shine By Three and Zanita Whittington of Zanita all gracing our TV screens once a week, we’re preparing ourselves for an extreme fashion blogger takeover. Because clogging our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter feeds just simply wasn’t enough.

“This series shows exactly why Fashion Bloggers are the new tastemakers of fashion and lifestyle,” executive producer of the upcoming show, Philippa Whitfield Pomeranz told Nelbie. “They don’t just report on the trends, they help shape them.”

The documentary-style series will be fittingly called Fashion Bloggers and begins filming next month, just in time for us to see the girls in action at New York Fashion Week. The show launches on an unconfirmed date later in the year, airing on Fetch and Foxtel.
