Vogue’s Drab Layout Does Kendall Jenner No Favors on Its September Cover (Forum Buzz)

It was bound to happen eventually. Five months after her Mario Testino-lensed Vogue Special Edition cover, Kendall Jenner has returned to the cover of Vogue for its all-seeing, all-knowing September issue. This morning, Jenner took to Instagram to announce her Mert and Marcus-shot cover (below), on which she wears a Napoleonic, bow-bedecked Gucci skirt suit — and not much else — against a slate background. “In a room with a bunch of people I love, looking at this cover made me cry. I FUCKING DID IT. SEPTEMBER VOGUE. This is the coolest thing ever! Can’t thank you enough Anna, for giving me the honor,” the model wrote on Instagram.

As our forum members pointed out, the pose and layout harken back to Beyoncé’s September 2015 cover. Meanwhile, the substance of the interview with “The Face That Launched a Billion Likes,” i.e. Kendall’s much-discussed, formidable social media presence, seems like a continuation of Wintour’s September 2014 Instagirl-themed issue. Kendall, however, shares the cover with no one. She is, in fact, the first lone model to grace the American glossy’s September chapter since Mario Testino-photographed Kate Moss back in 2011. The issue, which hits newsstands later this month, is now available through pre-order on Amazon.

As with all things Kendall-related, the sight of the Vogue cover prompted much discussion on our forums. Some were (for once) feeling Kendall, but not the cover’s styling or formatting.

“They did her no favors with the layout, shadow font, and cheap background. The image of her is actually really nice…” remarked JesseDillon. (more…)

The Trailer for Transgender Model Reality Series ‘Strut’ Is Here and It Slays

The trailer for Strut — the Whoopi Goldberg-produced, Oxygen-hosted reality series on transgender models we’ve been anticipating since May — is finally here. Trust us, this is one instance in which reality — scripted or no — exceeds expectations. Eleven seconds in to the two-minute clip cast member Dominique Jackson matter-of-factly tells the camera, “They want a girl that’s 6-[foot]-2, 35-25-35. They didn’t ask if you have a penis or not.” And just like that, we’re sold.

Including Jackson, the series stars five transgender models — her co-stars include Laith De La Cruz, former America’s Next Top Model finalist Isis King, Ren Spriggs and Arisce Wanzer — all of whom are signed to Slay Model Management, the first exclusively transgender modeling agency. (more…)

Anne Hathaway DIYs Her Denim and Champions Body Positivity in an Awesome Instagram Post

Hatha-haters, it’s time to get over it. For some inexplicable reason, the Alice Through the Looking Glass actress has long been a subject of arbitrary public scorn. “We love authenticity, that’s why we have a billion reality shows,” Neal Gabler, an author of several best-selling books on Hollywood culture and history, once told The New York Times, “And here comes Anne Hathaway. Everything she does seems managed, calculated or rehearsed. Her inauthenticity — or the feeling of her inauthenticity — is now viral.” However, after the new mom’s real-as-hell Instagram post on Monday night, we dare you to accuse her of faking it.

The refreshingly candid post features a clothing item that is a constant source of vexation for many women during the summer. No, it wasn’t another defiant, much-needed reminder that every body is a bikini body (Anne already took care of that awhile back, see above). This time, the U.N. global goodwill ambassador channeled her body positive message through a pair of jorts. (more…)

Michael Phelps and Kim Kardashian Are Trying to Make the Ancient Chinese Practice of Cupping Happen

Once you get over that facial expression, note Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps' brown shoulder marks, the visual results of "cupping."

Five days into the Rio Olympics, spectators have much to meditate over. Will French gymnast Samir Ait Said ever attempt a hurdle again? How did the world only just register the uncanny resemblance between American archer Brady Ellison and Leonardo DiCaprio? Why do Michael Phelps and several other Olympians appear to have escaped a struggle with a giant octopus? While only time and omniscient beings can resolve the first two musings, the answer to the latter is simple: cupping.

Get your minds out of the gutter. The ancient Chinese healing practice of “cupping” — in addition to helping Kim Kardashian relieve her (perfectly slicked-back pony-induced?) neck pain this Monday — is having an Olympic moment. (more…)

Opening Ceremony and Calvin Klein (and, indirectly, Kate Moss) are supporting AIDS research in #theircalvins. Yesterday the newest offering from the two brands’ ongoing collaboration (past releases include versions of the Modern Cotton bralette and boy shorts embroidered with an OC label) debuted on the Opening Ceremony website. The capsule collection features four crewneck tees — two black, two white — screen-printed with images from the David Sims-lensed 1993 Calvin Klein Underwear campaign.

“These images might as well have been shot today, they’re so fresh,” Leon told The New York Times, adding that the 90s resurgence had little to do with his and fellow creative director Carol Lim’s choice of subject matter: “Calvin Klein had a specific point of view that was innovative. I don’t think that we like being nostalgic or bringing things back for the sake of trends. It’s about moments that have been ingrained in us.” (more…)
