Plus-Size Women Could Be the Answer to the Retail Industry’s Woes (Report)

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — it’s time for the fashion industry to restructure and diversify. If social and cultural cues aren’t a strong enough impetus for change, perhaps this will catch retailers attention: A recent study by the NPD Group shows that while annual U.S. apparel sales increased by a mere 7 percent between 2013 and 2016, within the (egregiously underrepresented) plus-size category, profits rose by a whopping 17 percent. More plainly speaking, that’s a $20.4 billion dollar jump.

Color us unsurprised. Full-figured women have been marginalized by the industry for years and, clearly, not for lack of interest. Take this anecdote: On Monday, Christian Siriano hosted a runway show of his designs (at the United Nations, no less) for plus-size powerhouse Lane Bryant. The collection launched in stores a week prior. Today, most of the pieces have completely sold out. Women sizes 14 and up are all about the “see now, buy now” movement and if fast fashion brands were to capitalize on this market, we can only image the kind of statistics NPD would be reporting. Something Is Off With Heidi Klum’s Face on Harper’s Bazaar Australia (Forum Buzz)

It’s fair to say that our forums have always been huge advocates for everything Harper’s Bazaar Australia. We even got behind the magazine as it served up reprints (albeit turning them into fabulous covers) for the past two months. Thankfully, with the unveiling of the June/July 2016 edition, the title is finally back to commissioning its own shoots. Heidi Klum takes to the front cover of Bazaar‘s double issue, looking sensational wearing Christian Dior in a black-and-white image shot by Rankin.

Although, our eagle-eyed forum members noticed something slightly off. “Her face doesn’t look 100% natural, reminds me of Yolanda Hadid. Otherwise nice clean cover,” pointed out Nymphaea the moment the cover surfaced.

“A bit too over-Photoshopped around the face, other than that it works. Love the text placement,” said KateTheGreatest straight after. (more…)

Millennials Buy Handbags Like They’re Leasing a Car, According to New Study

New Study Explores Millennials' Handbag Purchasing Habits

Millennials have acquired a reputation for sloth and unhealthy attachment to our childhood homes, but on the bright side, we are smart shoppers — at least when it comes to our arm candy.

A new study from the NPD Group, conducted in partnership with Stylitics, examined what the heck is going on with the handbag industry. Though the category remains extremely lucrative, in recent years labels have had to adjust their sales strategies to keep up with market trends. The result? (Semi-) affordable mini bags galore and brands’ increased online presence.

Apparently, these approaches worked, at least as far as the U.S. is concerned. In 2015, women 18 and over spent a total of $11.5 billion on handbags, a 5 percent increase from the previous year. However, most of that growth was thanks to baby boomers whose discretionary cash-lined pockets subsidize their purse rotation. On the other hand, tote expenditures among women ages 18 to 34 only inched up 2 percent, the study showed. (more…)

Jesinta Campbell Doesn’t Care What Anyone Thinks of Her Logies Dress

TV and radio presenter Kate Longbroek gave a cyber lashing to Jesinta Campbell for her outfit choice at the Logies on Sunday night, but Jes hasn’t taken it lying down, penning a heartfelt and feisty response, all in the name of female empowerment.

ICYMI: Donning a custom-made Camilla & Marc, barely there netted gown, the Aussie model hit the Logies red carpet with confidence, shortly to be scalded over Instagram by Longbroek.

Selena Gomez Gives Us Supermodel Vibes on Marie Claire’s June Cover (Forum Buzz)

There’s no denying that Marie Claire has stepped up its game lately, generating positive feedback from our often very opinionated forum members. Last month, we were asked to choose from a selection of covers and for this month, Marie Claire hits the nail on the head once again. For its June 2016 installment, the American title secures Selena Gomez, whose last notable cover appearance for W magazine absolutely bombed. This time, photographer Kai Z Feng has transformed the 23-year-old singer, who gives off some serious supermodel vibes while delivering a dynamic shot full of energy and presence.

At first, we deliberated over a sneak peek of Selena’s cover shoot (above). “Not bad, but I really cannot wait for her to age. She always looks so young. That said, I don’t mind her getting all these covers,” said Benn98.

“I wonder if Selena actually is a good seller on the newsstands. She seems to always get a cover, but I’m actually really really bored of her. She’s boring. The preview cover is pretty though,” echoed RanThe. (more…)

Meghan Trainor Had the Perfect Response to Her Insanely Photoshopped Video

Clearly the editors of Meghan Trainor’s “Me Too” music video have had their heads buried deep, deep in the sand since 2014. Otherwise, they would have heard the refrains, “I see the magazines working that Photoshop/We know that shit ain’t real” and “Because you know I’m all about that bass/’Bout that bass, no treble” issuing from every radio tower from here to kingdom come. The Grammy winner’s success is a direct result of her killer vocals and body positive message, which is why the singer was quick to have the egregiously altered “Me Too” removed from Vevo.

In the fun flick, Meghan “M-Train” Trainor joyrides around L.A. in a giraffe onesie, drinking Starbucks and hanging out with her entourage, until she ditches the cozy life to front a turquoise dance squad in a glimmering royal blue asymmetric dress. Therein lay the trouble. (more…)
