Why We Need to Give ELLE Australia Major Props This Month (Forum Buzz)

While Australian Vogue opted for a reprint for its November cover, reusing Blake Lively’s shoot from U.S. Vogue‘s August issue, ELLE boldly produced an original shoot with one of the country’s top models. Aussie beauty Miranda Kerr looks flawless on ELLE’s November cover with tousled hair styled to one side, while wearing a sheer Valentino dress. Patrick Shaw also shot Miranda for a series of images inside the issue.

Our forum members were quick to discuss the cover when it surfaced. “Miranda looks good here and I like the dress. All those other hearts really are unnecessary if they’re doing so much text. I’d like to hear her take on the Bloom/Bieber drama, though she’ll probably keep quiet,” wrote Benn98.

Also referencing the hearts was justaguy: “Miranda looks like typical Miranda, but she does look cute. Unlike those silly hearts which makes this look very teenybopper.”

Forum member kokobombon didn’t appreciate it either and simply posted, “Silly layout,” inside the thread.

“The hearts are really unnecessary,” agreed GlamorousBoy.

“Is Miranda looking the same in every picture only to me?” questioned narcyza, who went on to post, “She seems tired. It’s boring to see every single time the same makeup, styling and hairstyle on her. It might be [the] cover of Cosmopolitan not ELLE.”

‘Russia’s Next Top Model’ Contestant Kate Grigorieva Stars on Numéro’s November Cover (Forum Buzz)

Fresh off the November cover of Vogue Russia, Kate Grigorieva is surely going places and now she stars on Numéro‘s latest installment. The former Russia’s Next Top Model contestant wears a coat from Alexander McQueen with a pair of black, high-waisted shorts on the French magazine’s November cover. Instead of enlisting the usual suspects, Numéro tapped Billy Kidd to shoot the distinctive Russian beauty. Charles Varenne styled the sitting, while Diego Da Silva tended to Kate’s hair and Fredrik Stambro applied a haunting makeup look to her doll-like face.

Yet forum members have mixed opinions on the cover. “I don’t think I like it. The hair and makeup seems unnecessary. Don’t mind the styling,” shared an underwhelmed Benn98.

“I don’t like her pose, this makes an ugly cover,” voiced a disappointed burbuja8910.

“This is beyond awful,” proclaimed crosidan. Ouch!

“This is quite an interesting cover. I can’t tell if I like it or not. Good for Kate though. I hope she gets more work this season,” posted an unsure valliaddict.

On the other hand, a handful of our forum members cannot stop expressing their satisfaction. “Striking! Amazing cover. Quite Fendi Fall 2012… ” commented Lola701.

“Amazing styling I really love it! And simply white background and a big black font are perfect choice. Only model’s head looks a little bit weird. But I love idea of this cover. Just stunning,” approved narcyza.

Also sharing the same sentiments was Cosmic Voices, who enthused, “I personally love it.”

Chris Benz Named Creative Director at Bill Blass

Bill Blass is looking to inject new life into its womenswear line and the brand just hired Chris Benz to do it. The designer, who up until now had been taking a time out from the fashion world, is back in the thick of things now that he’s taken on the role of creative director at the label.

Benz tells WWD that he plans to bring a fresh, new point of view to the house. Oftentimes when new designers come in at an already-established brand, the impulse is to draw inspiration from its past. Instead, he wants to focus on  “what feels modern today, what women need and want today outside of seasons, huge collections and overdevelopment with not only design and product but how [Blass] would be running his business, taking advantage of social media and new platforms for personality connections with the customer. As a designer looking to the future, you don’t want to get lost in the archives.”

The Bill Blass house itself is also making a return to fashion after a bit of a break. It hasn’t produced any womenswear collections since 2012. The big unveiling of its new collection will take place for Spring 2016, so there is still plenty of time for Benz to ruminate on what he’s going to do for his debut at the label.

Until then, we can’t wait to see what he turns out.

ELLE magazine Gets Charitable for the Cotton On Foundation

ELLE Australia magazine has joined forces with Cotton On, creating a limited-edition necklace and bracelet with proceeds helping the Cotton On Foundation fund its projects in Southern Uganda.

The charitable collaboration came about when members from the ELLE team, including editor Justin Cullen, feature’s editor Vanessa Lawrence and lifestyle director Jana Johnson-O’Toole, joined the Cotton On Foundation on a trip to Mannya Villahe in Southern Uganda. The girls witnessed the work which has been done for the community, and learned about their plans for the future, and were so inspired that they created accessories to help fund its projects.

“We feel so lucky to have visited some of the areas where the Cotton On Foundation is making such a difference, and we couldn’t wait to come home, tell the stories of the people we met and the things we saw, and enlist our readers to help the cause,” Justine told the Cotton On Foundation. (more…)
