Style Showdown: Double Denim Don’ts and More

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ’em how it’s done. Here’s a look at some celebrity fashion hits and misses:

Miss: Every denim fan has done it, reached for their favorite jacket on the way out the door only to look down at their jeans and realize—oh no! The dreaded double-denim! Denim jackets are a huge trend for spring, but you’ve got to be careful when pairing one with jeans, as Davina McCall, host of the UK’s version of the reality show Big Brother, showed as she left Riverside Studios in London. The fit of her denim jacket is great, but its wash was too similar to her jeans, inspiring unwanted visions of Britney Spears’ and Justin Timberlake’s all-denim suits at the 2001 American Music Awards.

Hit: The contrast between Kourtney Kardashian’s darker wash jeans and lighter cropped denim jacket differentiated the two to avoid a denim daze, and her long t-shirt put enough space between the two denim pieces to make this a chic and relaxed double-denim outfit.

Trend: Strong Shoulder

Miss: The shoulder trend is still going strong for spring, creating silhouettes that make a powerful statement. Katy Perry will try anything once—and her outrageous looks are often refreshing—but the oversized puffed sleeves on the unflattering emerald dress she wore to Australia’s 2011 Logie Awards create a cartoonish effect.

Hit: The embellished nude floral appliqués on the chic white Maxime Simoens shift that Rachel McAdams donned at the Cannes Film Festival added oomph to her hips and shoulders in a more subtle, ultra-feminine way.

Trend: Mellow Yellow

Miss: Brights are big this spring, but Vanessa Hudgens’ lemon yellow dress by Calvin Klein that she wore to the designer’s party at Cannes didn’t shine. The dress’ heavy assymetrical hem overwhelmed the petite actress’ frame, and overall the outfit seemed awkward and unfinished.

Hit: Gwyneth Paltrow was all yellow in a curve-hugging Rachel Roy dress at the launch of her cookbook My Father’s Daughter. The tailored bodice showed off her shape and the below-the-knee pencil skirt made the electric look very current.
