Forum Buzz: Loving Lizzie Olsen and Kirsten Dunst in Cannes

Elizabeth Olsen (the younger sister of uber-famous twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley), is in France for the 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival, promoting Martha Marcy May Marlene, a film in which she plays the title character, Martha. Fashion Spot forum members have long been fans of the twins and their quirky style, but they’ve been charmed by young Elizabeth as of late. She appeared at a photocall for Martha Marcy May Marlene wearing a pretty white dress with an antique feel from her sisters’ label, The Row.

Valentine27 posted: “She looks stunning, absolutely refreshing, and aw, wearing The Row.”

Loladonna expressed: “She’s so refreshingly normal compared to her sisters. No duck-lips and sucked in cheeks, ratty hair or weird outfits.”

Even MulletProof was impressed. “I can’t believe I’m in love with a dress from The Row,” she wrote. “She looks so adorable at Cannes, I didn’t even know that she was acting. I agree about her style being less ‘flashy’ than her sisters’, same for her attitude,” she added.

Elizabeth also wore The Row to the premiere of the film in Cannes, but that outfit was less successful. As MulletProof described: “It looks like the kind of top that seems a little see-through in front of a mirror but turns nearly transparent in front of a hundred cameras.” Oops… classic red carpet rookie mistake. She’ll do better next time, but in a way it’s a relief and it’s endearing to see a young actress who isn’t so trained and ready for the cameras on the red carpet. I had a tough time finding an image from the photocall that didn’t make it look like her legs were on backwards since her feet were crossed so awkwardly far apart in most of the photos.

She’s getting some great buzz for what is being touted as her breakout role, so I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of charming young Lizzie Olsen.

Yellow can be a tough color to wear, but sometimes blondes get it just right when they pair it with red lipstick (think Michelle Williams at the 2006 Oscars, Diane Kruger at the 2010 SAG Awards, and Renee Zellweger’s memorable vintage Jean Desses at the 2001 Oscars to name a few) and that’s exactly what Kirsten Dunst did at the Cannes photocall for Lars Von Trier’s film Melancholia, which she stars in with Charlotte Gainsbourg. Forum members were unanimous in their glowing praise for the look.

“She looks so sweet, I love the mustard + blond + red lips combination. It’s perfect for Cannes,” wrote saann. Jacquelyn paige posted her agreement: “That dress is stunning, the shade of yellow is perfect for her. I like her red lips as well, all very fresh!”

“So. Much. Respect. Mustard is underrated,” kaygilbert stated. So, blondes take note… a mustard dress with ketchup lips could be your new favorite color combination. Brunettes, don’t feel left out. I’ve done the yellow with red lips combo before too and I think we can make it work. I’m a fan.

Also in Cannes this week, Gwen Stefani attended the premiere of The Tree of Life. Gwen ditched her signature red lipstick for a super trendy fuchsia shade similar to the one Emma Stone has notably been favoring on red carpets everywhere lately. It’s almost like Gwen transferred her Return of Saturn-era hair color (am I completely dating myself… does anyone else remember when she had hot pink hair?) to her lipstick, and I think it’s a good thing. This shade of pink seems to work particularly well on women with icy-blonde hair and fair skin.

“What a stunner, love the whole look,” wrote Nefertiti87.

Meghann exclaimed, “I love her fuchsia lips!” But, for McClaire, the makeup missed the mark. “I think the makeup is a little much and harsh,” she wrote.

The fuchsia lipstick look isn’t for the faint of heart. You either love it or you don’t. Gwen Stefani may be 41 years old, but she’s still a trendsetter who is not afraid to make a bold statement.
