Blame the high of the unexpectedly stunning looks and parade of couture we saw at Cannes (see here, here, and here), but the red carpet at this year's 2011 Billboard Music Awards was somewhat of a letdown.
Black was a dominant color with Beyonce opting for a long sleeve Lanvin cocktail dress, Kylie Minogue wearing an embellished silk-tulle, organza, and satin Spring 2011 Alexander McQueen, and Nicole Kidman supporting her husband, Keith Urban, in a long Dolce & Gabbana dress with a sheer bottom.
Also in a long Dolce & Gabbana look was Selena Gomez who looked sexier than she ever has in her dress which boasted a low cut top, a thigh-high slit, and side cut-outs. Adding to the sultriness of the look, Gomez wore her long hair straight and paired her outfit with red shoes. Lastly in the notable black outfit department was Fergie going for an S&M look in a Herve Leger by Max Azria Atelier dress. While Fergie's look may have been a little overkill when combined with her heavy eye makeup and the dress itself came off as heavy on Alexander McQueen inspiration, thumbs up to the singer for making a harness and gold hardware look appealing.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Rihanna surprisingly opted for a sleek and simple loose-fitting Max Azria white suit (though the top did have a slit cut down to the singer's navel). Not as surprising was Taylor Swift who, per usual, opted for an uber-embellished light-colored floor-grazing gown, which in this case came courtesy of Elie Saab.
While the red carpet may have been a bit of a snooze overall, it didn't have too many overt flops, with the exception of Mary J Blige in a leopard print Marc Bouwer gown with a high neckline and side black panels, Ke$ha in a metallic sequined tulle and chiffon cut-out Jad Ghanour dress, and Nicki Minaj in a Mark Fast light blue jumpsuit.
