Get the Look: Celeb-Inspired Midi and Maxi Skirts

Sometimes it’s the little touches that take your outfit from average to enviable. Celebrities have stylists to calculate all the complicated nuances of putting together a look, but we aren’t all so fortunate. Luckily, tFS has put together some celeb-inspired styling tips and tricks to help you give your look that extra oomph! This week, stars show you three different ways to wear this summer’s trendy skirt length, the maxi, from beachy street style to elegant eveningwear.

Tip #1: Get beachy in accordion pleats like Olivia Palermo

Copy Olivia Palermo’s summery street style with this season’s must-have texture—accordion pleats. Pleated skirts don’t have to make you look like a schoolgirl, as Palermo demonstrates in her sage Topshop pleated maxi and silk safari blouse from Mango. When this skirt catches a breeze, the effect is almost ethereal, and her woven tote and Wunderkind sunglasses could take this outfit from the sidewalk to the boardwalk. Try tucking a loose button-down into a high-waisted maxi with these petite pleats.

Tip #2: A maxi and tank make for elegant eveningwear à la Olivia Wilde

At the Fresh Air Fund Gala, Olivia Wilde looked stunning in her black-and-white ensemble by Rag & Bone. Her shimmering white v-neck tank tucked into a black silk maxi skirt made for an effortless but elegant look, and her side-swept updo and red lips completed the glamorous outfit. Take a cue from Wilde and pair an evening maxi in silk or chiffon with chunky peep-toe pumps.

1. American Apparel Satin Charmeuse Loose Tank – $28;  2. Pins and Needles Chiffon Maxi Skirt – $54;  3. Rag & Bone Double Layer Silk-Chiffon Maxi Skirt – $395

Tip #3: Bloom in an A-line floral midi like Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan stood out in a cheery rose-patterened A-line midi skirt as she took a break from rehearsing her new play, Through a Glass Darkly, in the East Village. Florals are still big this season, and Mulligan’s pairing of a pretty skirt with a lacy black blouse was an on-trend way to show off her return to brunette locks. Her covetable tan Celine Paris luggage tote and oversized sunglasses completed the retro look. The only thing we would change would be to swap the black brogues for a more in-season tan sandal.

1. Forever 21 Rosebud Duster Skirt – $22.80;  2. Ecote Canvas Two-Pocket Tote Bag – $69;  3. Topshop Black Rose Print Silk Midi Skirt By Boutique – $130
