Style Showdown: Sarah Jessica Parker’s Crazy Cape and More

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ‘em how it’s done. Here’s a look at the latest celeb hits and misses, from Sarah Jessica Parker’s crazy cape and Miley Cyrus’ matronly misstep to Beyonce’s marvelous maternity gown and Zoe Saldana’s sexy salmon leather.

Miss: Usually the rule of thumb is that even if an outfit is relatively freaky, Sarah Jessica Parker can rock it. But the scarlet Giambattista Valli gown and cape she wore to the Moscow premiere of her new comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It just looked costumey—perhaps in any other color the concept could have worked. The strapless couture gown underneath was gorgeous, but the cape was distracting and only emphasized SJP’s tendency to look a bit witchy. [Editor’s note: I’m sure SJP will be relieved to know that some of us liked this look]

Hit: Undoubtedly the glow of pregnancy had a role in what made Beyonce shine on the red carpet at the MTV VMA’s, but her poppy silk crepe Lanvin gown and Lorraine Schwartz chandelier jewels sure didn’t hurt. Only Beyonce could make maternity this sexy.

Miss: They told Miley Cyrus to cover up, and unlike any teen queen pop star in history, she listened—a little too well. We’d love to see her long-sleeved, floor length green leopard-and-floral Roberto Cavalli gown on Helen Mirren or Sharon Osbourne, but it was much too matronly for a minor.

Hit: Rose Byrne nailed the green leopard look in the Dolce & Gabbana emerald mini-dress she wore belted for an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. After all, if you’re going to go the technicolor animal print route, you might as well show a little leg.

Trend: Salmon

Miss: Ever run a Google search on Jennifer Love Hewitt and Herve Leger? The results are impressive—she must have a whole closet just for storing bandage dresses. That’s why we were completely unimpressed by the salmon pink Herve Leger dress that the actress squeezed into for the LA premiere of her new movie Café. Yes, it showcases her Kardashian-worthy hourglass figure, and yes, corals are a trending hue, but if we see JLH in one more bandage dress we might… yawn.

Hit: Zoe Saldana showed off a more exciting way to look sexy in salmon in the leather Valentino dress she wore to a special screening of her upcoming film Columbiana. Her cream Louboutin heels, Ferragamo clutch, and retro floral Irene Neuwirth earrings completed the look that was the perfect combination of demure and edgy.
