Celebs Anticipate NYFW’s Waterfall Hemline

Remember the old adage that hemlines rise and fall with the economy? As Glamour recently pointed out, the asymmetrical hemlines featured on the runways at NYFW just might be reflective of the current swings of the stock market. Whether you call them waterfall hemlines or the less-glamorous ‘mullet’ skirt, Jason Wu, Vera Wang, and Y-3 were among the designers who sent short-in-the-front and long-in-the-back skirts down the runway. Forum readers already love it, and fashion-forward celebs like Zoe Saldana, Kourtney Kardashian, and Anne Hathaway, who have been spotted rocking dresses with waterfall trains this summer, anticipated the runway trend as well. Check out the inspiring runway looks and celebs’ red carpet-ready versions.

Selena Gomez is a huge proponent of the trend. She glittered in a beaded fringe skirt with a sheer, sweeping train in back while performing at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, and rocked a dramatic waterfall train at the VMA’s in a lacy Julien Macdonald gown.

At the Teen Choice Awards, Demi Lovato and Kourtney Kardashian were both spotted in the asymmetrical hemline. Lovato’s citrine BCBG Max Azria dress featured a short pleated skirt in front which sailed behind her in a fluttery train. Kardashian stood out in a tiny cobalt blue dress by Blaque Label with a flowing sheer overlay that cascaded into a waterfall train. Zoe Saldana earned a spot on our Look of the Day list in the Balmain Resort 2012 gown with a chiffon train that she wore to the premiere of Columbiana in Miami.

The look doesn’t have to be formal; Vanessa White of the Saturdays rocked a casual floral dress with a high-low hemline while performing at the Sainbury’s Festival, and Anne Hathaway arrived at LAX in a chic striped jersey version.
