Style Showdown: Gwen Stefani and Emma Roberts Clash in a Pattern War

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ‘em how it’s done. Here’s a look at this week’s celeb hits and misses, from Gwen Stefani and Emma Roberts’ zany head-to-toe prints to Alexa Chung’s pretty peter pan collar and Paris Hilton’s cool-oozing cape.

Hit or miss? It’s a tie! Gwen Stefani is known for pushing the style envelope, but at the launch of her children’s line for Target, Harajuku Mini, she pushed it too far. Bold geometric prints have been hot since the summer, but Stefani shows that sticking to one patterned piece or even mixing complementary patterns is better than going head-to-toe. Her black and white suit is positively dizzying, and adding a multi-layered collar necklace doesn’t do anything to tone down the look. Even her stylish topknot is ruined by the 90s pseudo-bang strands she left out. While Emma Roberts’ look has a little less going on, what it lacks in terms of pattern coverage it makes up for in color. At the Versace for H&M show, she wore a neon floral corset top and leggings by the designer. Either piece would be awesome on its own, but paired together it’s just too Nicki Minaj. To top it off, her cute purse and awesome hair are completely incongruous with the look.

Trend: Peter Pan Collars

Miss: That look on British X Factor host Caroline Flack’s face says that she’s also wondering why she wore this outfit to the Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 premiere. The peter pan collar is totally on-trend, but unfortunately it’s peeking out from behind that blue velvet playsuit. First, you know it was too cold to be wearing shorts—even velvet ones—in London in November. Second, the shape is unflattering. And third, blue velvet will always remind me of Austin Powers.

Hit: You knew this one would have to go to Alexa Chung; the queen of hipster fashion is, of course, also the queen of the peter pan collar and probably single-handedly responsible for making it such a trend this season. Snapped outside of the shows at Paris Fashion Week, she looked like a chic schoolgirl in a Louis Vuitton Resort 2011 look consisting of a grey sweater layered over a blouse with a peter pan collar, a pretty floral A-line skirt, leather duffel and bow flats.

Trend: Capes

Miss: Capes are one of those styles you have to be really careful with. Very chic as a coat, then you attach one to a cut-out dress and you get this. British singer Jenny Frost looked like she got stuck somewhere halfway between Superman, Clark Kent, and Lois Lane at the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards in London (yes, that’s a real event) wearing a body-con cut-out dress with epaulets and a gauzy cape.

Hit: Paris Hilton knows that when you go cape, it’s go big or go home. Arriving at LAX airport, she oozed celebrity cool in this camel colored Rachel Zoe cape coat worn with over-the-knee leather boots, leather luggage, and don’t-look-at-me sunglasses.
