Style Showdown: Jennifer vs. Jennifer

alt

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ‘em how it’s done. Here’s a look at this week’s celeb style hits and misses, from Jennifer Hudson’s thigh highs and Elle Fanning’s outdated sleepover style to Miley Cyrus’ casual rock n’ roll look and Jennifer Lopez’s knock-out Louboutins.

Trend #1: Over-the-Knee Boots

Miss: Jennifer Hudson’s figure is looking fly, so it makes sense that she wants to show it off—but the look she wore on the red carpet at the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul event in NYC was more stripper than diva. Thigh-high boots are enough of a statement without being covered in rhinestones, let alone paired with a super-short satin dress and choker necklace. If Hudson was going for an all-petal-pink palette, her mismatched gold hoop earrings ruined the effect.

Hit: Jennifer Lopez classed up over-the-knee boots as she arrived at the American Idol studios, playing with textures in a flowing teal chiffon dress, navy knitted duster and knock-out suede thigh-high Louboutin boots.

Trend #2: Distressed Denim

Miss: Elle Fanning broke into the style scene this year, going from child star/little sister to pint-sized fashionista in designer looks on the red carpet. But as she carried bedding into a sleepover in L.A., she looked not only younger than her years, but before her time—the budding actress’ distressed Capri jeans, puffy white platforms and Hello Kitty bag harkened back to some turn-of-the-millenium fashions we’d all like to forget.

Hit: The distressed denim trend may have been around the block, but styled appropriately, your old holey jeans can still be fresh. As Miley Cyrus stopped by Panera for lunch with friends, her outfit had all the perfect ingredients for the casual rock 'n’ roll look: a pair of distressed skinnies, pumps, a concert tee, leather jacket, cool-weather layers and mussed waves.

Trend #3: Velvet Jacket and Hat

Miss: The perfect way to transition your fall favorites to winter is by layering on a boho hat and one of the season’s chicest outerwear trends, the velvet jacket. Julianne Hough seemed to think that she could add these elements to a summer look, however, buttoning her black velvet blazer over shorts and leaving her legs bare with peeptoe gladiator ankle boots—brr! This look makes me shudder as much as it must have made her.

Hit: Kourtney Kardashian showed Hough how to wear a velvet jacket and hat in a look that would make Rachel Zoe proud—she left her blazer open over a white peasant top and leather leggings, adding of-the-moment accessories like a floppy felt hat, oversized sunglasses, and over-the-knee boots with a scallop detail.
