Get the Celeb Look: Pleated Skirts

alt

Sometimes it’s the little touches that take your outfit from average to enviable. Celebrities have stylists to calculate all the complicated nuances of putting together a look, but we aren’t all so fortunate. Luckily, tFS has put together some celeb-inspired styling tips and tricks to help you put together a look that’s got that extra oomph! Pleated skirts might recall repressed memories of your (or maybe just Britney Spears’) old school uniform, but the fluttery skirts were a staple on Spring 2011 and 2012 runways, and now celebs are saying “yes, please” to pleats. Let Blake Lively, Rachel McAdams, and Dianna Agron show you how to take pleats to a sophisticated new level.

Tip #1: Go for the gold in metallic pleats.

You might think pleats are frumpy, but in fancy metallic fabrics, this trend is golden. Blake Lively wore a gold pleated leather Gucci skirt from the Resort 2012 collection while making cupcakes for charity at Sprinkles Bakery in NYC. Gucci wouldn’t be my first choice for baking, but Lively looked lovely with a sheer white blouse tucked into the skirt, accented with a gold flower brooch at the neck.

1. Sparkle & Fade Lamé Skirt – $39.99 2. Dorothy Perkins Vintage Flower Brooch – $14;
3. Tusk Croc Embossed Double Zipper Clutch Wallet – $120;   4. Gap Pleated Henley Top – $34.99;  5. Rochas Brocade Skirt – $1,345

Tip #2: Trade schoolgirl plaid for stylish stripes.

It was cold outside when Rachel McAdams left the Covent Garden Hotel after having dinner with boyfriend Michael Sheen’s parents, but she looked warm and cozy in a heavy pleated skirt. The vintage-looking skirt’s stripes combined with her army green coat and brown knee-high boots create a chic military-inspired look with wartime echoes. She layered on a fuzzy blue cap, gunmetal gray scarf, and arm warmers to protect against the chill (but not the paparazzi).

1. DV by Dolce Vita Ambrose Tan and Black Striped Pleated Skirt – $74;   2. Linea Textured Oblong Scarf with Tassels – $22;   3. Rag & Bone Admiral Coat – $795;  4. Quiksilver Cozy Beanie – $20.655. Tilly’s Arm Warmers – $5.97;  6. Piperlime Gomax Fashion News 10 – $39.97

Tip #3: Wear a pleated maxi skirt for easy elegance.

Dianna Agron looked fresh as she stepped out of a beauty salon in Beverly Hills wearing a nude pleated chiffon maxi skirt. These skirts transform any outfit with easy elegance because of the way the tiny pleats swirl around you when you walk (no cheesy music video fans needed). The Glee actress tucked in a white safari blouse, but if you live in a colder climate, you could easily pair a breezy pleated maxi with a close-fitting crew neck sweater for warmth.

1. Banana Republic Heritage Fitted Safari Blouse – $79.50;  2. LC Lauren Conrad Pleated Maxi Skirt – $30;  3. Tusk Croc Embossed Double Zipper Clutch Wallet – $120; 4. Lush Pleated Maxi Skirt – $36;  5. BCBGirls Pallin Bootie – $103.49;  6. AE Oversized Cat Eye Sunglasses – $16
