Footwear Forecast: Celebs Go Wild for Bondage Boots

No shrinking violets allowed for this trend—there’s absolutely nothing demure about a pair of over-the-knee boots. Add laces, straps and studs, and the look is positively dominatrix. But that doesn’t mean that the sudden Hollywood craze for bondage-inspired boots is limited only to the naughty types—even America’s sweethearts are trying the tough trend.

A thigh-high boot is an obvious choice for bad girl Rihanna—on her current Diamonds world tour, she’s stomping the stage in a custom-designed leather bustier and shorts under a sheer shirt dress with matching studded boots by Givenchy. She took the look to the street in a strappy pair of nude Tom Ford over-the-knee boots—an unconventional color choice for the footwear that tempers its sexiness and makes it work with her butterfly-print Mary Katrantzou mini. Ri-Ri must be rubbing off on her BFF Cara Delevingne, who was spotted in a pair of over-the-knee boots from Rihanna’s collection for River Island. Lana Del Rey looked fierce in the front row at Versace, wearing a punky seductive look by the designer featuring an exposed lacy bustier and black boots with gold hardware.

Boots are also a surprising showstopper on the red carpet. Anne Hathaway made waves when she wore Tom Ford’s boots in black at the Les Miserables New York premiere, complementing the look with a vampy lip. Beyoncé’s Givenchy look at the Met Gala featured head-to-toe flames including the boots. A studded belt and gloves gave the pop star’s outfit an even more firey feel. Diane Kruger contrasted a modest Chanel frock with a pair of suede Louboutin stiletto boots that came up so high they gave the impression of tights. Rita Ora showed off her flair for the dramatic while clubbing in London, showing off her legs in a pair of sexy Jimmy Choo laced boots.

One of the more wholesome stars giving the boot a clean new image is Selena Gomez, who wore a strappy pair of Brian Atwood boots with a black trench for her appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Nickelodeon’s Erin Sanders even wore a pair to the Kid’s Choice Awards. Her platform suede Aperire pair gave some edge to her sweet babydoll dress. If it was possible to give the bondage boot a boho makeover, Vanessa Hudgens is the girl to do it. She paired lace-up Jeffrey Campbell wrestling boots with a patterned sundress. With the weather heating up, this may be a trend that gets puts on hold—but come fall, it seems like we’re going to be seeing a lot more of the bondage boot.
