Penélope Cruz (NOT Lady Gaga) Will Play Donatella Versace in ‘Versace: American Crime Story’

Taking a page out of Nicole Kidman’s book, Oscar winner Penélope Cruz has signed on for her first regular TV role. She’ll be playing Donatella Versace in American Crime Story’s much-hyped take on the Gianni Versace murder. You know, the role executive producer Ryan Murphy originally implied would go to Lady Gaga, Donatella’s longtime BFF and seemingly long-lost twin.

The Spanish actress, who has mostly stuck to movie roles, will share billing with actors Edgar Ramirez, set to play Donatella’s brother Gianni Versace, and Darren Criss, who will play Gianni’s murderer, serial killer Andrew Cunanan. While Cruz isn’t as obvious a fit for the role as the Joanne singer, thanks to Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces, we can kinda-sorta picture her with a pin-straight, platinum blonde ‘do. Plus, physical resemblances aside, Cruz certainly has the acting chops to make us believe.

The 10-episode third season of American Crime Story will make its FX debut in 2018.
