As the weather heats up, you'd expect skirt hemlines to follow. Surprisingly, maxi-length skirts and dresses are being seen on fashionistas everywhere, as the NY Times recently reported, and celebrities are no exception to the trend.

Some celebs' maxi dresses are a stylish nod to the Greek goddesses, Jane Austen protagonists, and hippies who wore them best, while others just seem to be dusting the floor.

Whitney Port must love maxis - she sported a cinched, gray jersey dress while getting her nails done in NYC, and another silky mauve maxi to a charity dinner. The maxi dress is a definite marker of a free spirit, but here the usually composed and original The City actress shows that one can get a little too free with billowing maxi skirts. She's lost in the endless fabric of these dresses, the latter of which bares an unfortunate resemblance to a shower curtain.

Nothing says "Little House on the Prairie" like a maxi dress, so it's appropriate that country singer and ballroom dancer Julianne Hough was wearing one recently as she was seen leaving the Fox Studios. However, the palm-inspired print, complimented by her soft mermaid waves, created a summery look that was more tropical resort than prairie.
