Black Dresses with Sweetheart Necklines: Red Carpet Trend

Celebrity Fashion
December 09, 2010

Stars like Anna Popplewell and Natalie Portman have been reviving this retro look, opting for gowns in black to keep the look from becoming too precious.

Nothing makes a dress as classic and feminine as the aptly named sweetheart neckline. The scalloped top accentuates the décolletage, and was popular in 50s fashion. Recently, stars on the red carpet have been reviving the vintage cut, opting for gowns in black to keep the look from becoming too precious.

Anna PopplewellNatalie Portman

English actress Anna Popplewell wore a black satin dress with a sweetheart neckline by designer Lee Klabin for the Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader premiere in London. The assymetrical top, and pleats in the skirt added a funky touch to an otherwise basic black dress. At the Black Swan premiere, Natalie Portman wore a Dior gown with sheer, off-the-shoulder sleeves. Her waves and red lipstick gave the outfit some va-va-voom.

Winona RyderMila Kunis

Winona Ryder's black lace dress by Dolce & Gabbana had a similar cut, but with an adorably poofed skirt. Black lace is a huge trend for celebs right now, and Ryder's peach lipstick and simple teardrop earrings complemented her vintage look at the IFC's Gotham Independent Film Awards. Sweetheart necklines were all over the red carpet at the Gotham Awards– Mila Kunis looked lovely in a silk dress by Oscar de la Renta.
