Style Showdown: Jessica Biel’s Suit Snafu and More

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ’em how it’s done. Here’s a look at some celebrity fashion hits and misses as stars try daring trends like the crop-top, summer suit, and more.

Trend: The Summer Suit

Miss: Jessica Biel is taking a lot of heat for the teal suit she wore to film a commercial for Walgreens—and not just because she was wearing head-to-toe velvet in late May. I doubt anyone was green with envy for Biel’s Austin Powers-inspired suit—we can only hope it was a wardrobe decision by the Walgreens team and not her own choice.

Hit: Solange Knowles’ personal style is definitely unique, but she always knows how to work the quirk. At the Carol’s Daughter and Monoi Repairing Collection launch at Sephora in NYC, Knowles showed that a suit in a bright color can be chic for spring. Her white shirt and tan accessories pulled together the sunny look, and details like the cuff of the slim but flowy pants and her white pedicure were on-trend. And of course she topped the daring look off with her awesome out-there ’fro.

Trend: Crop-Top

Miss: Kelly Rowland may be taking over Cheryl Cole’s spot on the panel of judges for the UK’s hit show The X Factor, but it looks like she doesn’t have her predecessor’s style. Crop-tops are trending with celebs right now, but the former Destiny’s Child member’s see-through yellow lace top that she wore to the show’s Birmingham auditions was a definite no. Rowland has complained of not being able to understand some of the British accents on this show, but we just can’t understand this outfit.

Hit: Crop-tops don’t have to be completely avoided, as Ashley Tisdale showed in two recent looks. The Disney Channel starlet demonstrated how wearing a crop-top doesn’t mean you have to bare it all, as long as you pair it with the right high-waisted bottom. On Canada’s Much Music, she wore a billowy cropped white tank with high-waisted sailor jeans, and left the recording studio in a scalloped coral Free People tank layered over a high-waisted zig-zag bandage skirt.

Trend: Black long-sleeved collared mini dress

Miss: At the Skateland premiere, Jamie King’s lacy, black, collared mini-dress was not red carpet-ready. King drowned in the oversized fit of the dress and her awkwardly placed purse, slicked-back hair and out-of-place white Keds only further confused the outfit.

Hit: Alexa Chung looked lovely in her schoolgirl-inspired ensemble while walking with a friend in NYC. The long sleeves and oversized 70s collar gave the Marc by Marc Jacobs mini-dress a retro feel. She wore the dress in 2010 with opaque tights, but her bare legs, pointy flats, sunglasses and woven bag took this look into summer.
