Remembering Amy Winehouse’s Unique Style

Yes, she was often photographed outside her London apartment in a crumpled tank top, cigarette in hand, wearing barely-there shorts, but from her signature black bouffant hairstyle and cat-like eye makeup to her pinup girl tattoos and vintage dresses, there’s no denying Amy Winehouse had a unique style all her own — one that inspired many designers, including Michael Kors and Karl Lagerfeld.

With news of her untimely passing on Saturday at age 27, we reflect on our five favorite looks from the talented, and troubled, chanteuse. R.I.P. Amy.

1. Black and white and lovely all over.

Our favorite look of Amy’s has to be the black and white dress she donned to perform her hit ‘Rehab’ on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on April 24, 2007 (below, left). Check out the video of her performance at the end of this article to see the full ensemble which featured flawless makeup, nude heels and minimal jewelry. This is how we’ll always remember her.

2. 50s pinup girl meets biker chick.

Amy took a break from her bouffant in Scotland on July 13, 2008 while performing at the ‘T in the Park’ music festival (above, right). The ‘Valerie’ singer sported a Rosie the Riveter-esque updo adorned with a heart for her then husband Blake Fielder-Civil along with gold costume jewelry, red high-waisted shorts, and a cropped leather motorcycle jacket.

3. Classic London street style.

We can’t speak for what’s underneath her jacket (she was photographed in this exact outfit the day before this photo was taken on November 27, 2007), but we have to give the London native props for using a silk scarf as a belt around a classic trench coat (below, left). We’re definitely going to try that on some rainy day in the future.

Amy’s on stage uniform routinely consisted of her signature hairstyle and cinched-waist mini dresses. Occasionally, like in the photo above taken on June 28, 2008 at the Glastonbury Festival, she’d punch it up with a one-of-a-kind dress and unexpected hair accessories, like the pink and yellow drink umbrellas seen here.

5. Back to black.

Dressed head to toe in her signature color, this is perhaps one of her most ladylike looks (right), captured while leaving her London apartment on January 24, 2007, thanks to black gloves, a structured bag and a black and white checkered tie.
