Met Gala 2012: Red Carpet Recap

The queen of the night, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, wore a white and gold custom Prada dress with a lobster on it in homage to Schiapiarelli‘s famed lobster dress, which she topped off with a white fur. Perhaps the most buzzed about outfit of the evening however belonged to Coco Rocha who wore a pant suit she bought at the Liz Taylor auction that had an actual Taylor-spilled wine stain on it (she did not have it dry cleaned). Sadly the yellow and hot pink ensemble looked somewhat clown-ish with the model’s hot pink-accented hair, satin platform pumps, and gold clutch.

Prada was of course the designer of choice for many of the night’s biggest stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Bosworth, Diane Kruger, Jessica Biel, and Carey Mulligan. As for the night’s running silhouette, many stars opted for structured dresses. Elizabeth Banks dazzled in a digitally printed Mary Katrantzou dress with an oversized peplum and central split and Solange Knowles and January Jones both opted for bright yellow bustier gowns.

Jessica Pare, Bianca Brandolini D’Adda, Lana Del Ray, Nina Dobrev, and Julie Chen all opted for very (read overly), sparkly pieces, while Dakota Fanning went the princess route in Louis Vuitton and HBO’s new “it” girl Lena Dunham got dolled up in a green Wes Gordon dress, which she paired with pink pumps (per Hamish Bowles‘ recommendation).

The most surprising moment? When Karolina Kurkova took to the red carpet in a glimmering Rachel Zoe Collection gown and turban – she looked fantastic and was arguably the best dressed of the night. Here’s a look at all these looks and more.
