I thought that it couldn’t get worse than MAC collaborating with Dame Edna – then it was announced that the cosmetic giant was collaborating with Hello Kitty. Last month I was able to get a sneak peek at the line that’s set to launch in February and it was explained to me and the others in attendance that we were going to see the naughty side of Kitty.
What does that mean? Apparently images of Hello Kitty against a black backdrop. The thought of anyone past the age of 10 pulling-out a Hello Kitty emblazoned cosmetic product is a little odd, but given the Sanrio character’s cult following the line will no doubt be a huge success.
In fact. to celebrate the limited edition collaboration — which will officially hit MAC’s website and MAC counters on February 10th. and select Northern American stores on February 12th – MAC has enlisted a various big name fashion designers to design twenty couture pieces inspired by Hello Kitty. Those pieces will be presented just before the launch on February 5th — a week before the start of New York Fashion Week.
The fashion designers involved in the MAC Hello Kitty Couture Design are more than impressive. They include Catherine Malandrino, Charlotte Ronson, Herve Leger, Kai Kuhne, Rosa Cha, Ruffian, Tadashi Shoji, The Blonds, threeasFOUR, Tibi , Vicente Villarin , Giles, Sinha Stanic, Blumarine, Dress 33, Elie Saab, Emmanuel Ungaro, Manish Arora, Bumseok Choi, Qiu Hao, Zimmerman, Kate Sylvester, and Shu Chi Huang. All the Hello Kitty-inspired couture pieces will be auctioned off on the internet with the proceeds being donated to organizations that support young and emerging fashion designers.
While I’m not particularly excited for the cosmetic fruits of the MAC and Sanrio collaboration to launch (with the exception of the gray nail polish which I have a strong feeling will be the stand-out hit), I am looking forward to seeing what so many of today’s most talented designers come-up with to celebrate the collaboration.
