PARIS: SONIA RYKIEL F/W 09

I can’t imagine the stress that Sonia Rykiel creative director Gabrielle Greiss must have felt this season given that she had to follow-up on last season’s 40th anniversary Sonia Rykiel extravaganza that included a star-studded group of designers showing specially designed Rykiel-inspired fashions.

I was delighted that the designer followed-up in an appropriately small-scale, cutesy fashion. Greiss had the models speak short, smile-inducing sentences as they turned on the runway in the decidedly smaller venue – the Sonia Rykiel Boulevard Saint-Germain boutique.

As for the collection, it was completely Rykiel with tongue and check pieces like a sweater with the phrase “Tres Cher Pull Over” emblazoned on it, quirky hats and sunglasses, slouchy androgynous pants, two piece suits, and flats, color-blocking, ruffle-focused tops, and an overall jovial attitude that was highlighted by the models’ musings. One model stated “I’m a red fox,” while another proclaimed “I’m wearing sunglasses because I’m a star.”

I imagine Rykiel must be proud that her namesake line is continuing in such a delightfully Parisian-chic way.
