MATTHEW WILLIAMSON DESIGN FOR H&M

This spring, Matthew Williamson will provide H&M shoppers with an exclusive look into his world of design. Pairing what Williamson considers to be iconic styles from some of his past collections with radiant color from current runway looks, his limited edition womenswear collection is full of vibrant and eclectic prints.

On April 23, approximately 200 H&M store locations worldwide will offer the first part of the collection for spring. Beginning May 14, a summer collection for men and women will be available in all 1,700 H&M store locations worldwide. This will be the first time an H&M designer collaboration collection is available in all stores and will mark Williamson’s menswear debut.

Matthew Williamson noted in a press release that he wanted to create a strong urban collection while incorporating H&M’s signature symbols and shapes, adding that it has “been fascinating to look back at my past collections to identify the most iconic, influential garments, to then, rework them for H&M. Color is a major element in defining my signature style.  I took inspiration from a peacock motif, as seen in my collections, to develop a palette of blues, chartreuse and emerald. The spirit of the collection is both desirable and precious.”

The Creative Advisor at H&M, Margareta van den Bosch, said that she thinks people will “really love this collection. Matthew’s use of mixed prints in dresses and color-blocking in tailored pieces is exceptionally innovative.  While the collection is elegant, there are several garments that can be worn relaxed. The mixture of embroidery, prints, sequins and colors make the clothes come together for a very special collection.”

The Matthew Williamson for H&M collection will have the same vibrant style that has made the London designer a fashion celebrity.  Key pieces from the collection include a bias-cut, butterfly printed dress with grosgrain straps paired with a cashmere sweater that includes peacock embroidery over one shoulder.  The look is reminiscent of one of Williamson’s favorites, dating back to his first show in 1997.  Also included in the collection are pieces inspired by Williamson’s most recent runway collection such as an electric blue tuxedo with bold color-blocking. “The color blocking provides innovative style to the look whether worn over jeans, biker or cigarette pants,” says Williamson.

Using a jacquard print, exclusive to the H&M collection, Williamson includes a metallic jacket and bubble skirt while the peacock motif is once again seen in a versatile jersey dress.  Show pieces include an ultra-short, long-sleeved sequin dress with printed bursts of color and an evening dress recreated from one of Williamson’s most celebrated pieces: a beaded ruffle gown in a vivid tiger butterfly print.
