WITHERSPOON TACKLES FRAGRANCES

As if the fragrance industry hasn’t been suffering enough due to over-saturation, now comes the news that Academy Award winning actress Reese Witherspoon is getting her own scent, thanks to Avon. Witherspoon has been the mega brand’s global ambassador and brand spokeswoman for the last two years.

Like most celebs, Witherspoon had no idea about what goes into making a fragrance. “I thought you just pick a fragrance and it’s easy. But there were all these different levels of creating a scent that were new to me, but really fun and exciting. I’m such a girly girl anyways. I really enjoy makeup and perfume,” she said.

I assume it’s a safe bet that the perfume, which has been in development for the last two years, was created mostly with the trained nose of expert perfumers (in this case Isabel Ryan, Avon’s director of creative fragrance development, and perfumer Olivia Jan of Robertet).

That said, the actress said her southern roots are apparent in the scent. Called In Bloom, it features white flowers.  “Gardenia is a big thing for me because of my father — every Mother’s Day, or on my birthday, he would buy small bouquets or corsages for my mother and I. And my mother always wore beautiful white-flower perfumes, so as a young girl, that was my idea of femininity,”  Witherspoon said.  In Bloom has top notes of Georgia peach, tea leaves and crisp greens. Middle notes are star gardenia, magnolias and night-blooming jasmine, and bottom notes are cashmere woods, hypnotic florals, and amber wood crystals.
