PROENZA SCHOULER MAKES JUMPSUITS SHINE

PROENZA SCHOULER MAKES JUMPSUITS SHINE

What looks silly on one fashion runway can be stunning on another, as Proenza Schouler proved Monday evening at its preview of spring styles. The harem pants and jumpsuits that looked gimmicky at other shows at New York Fashion Week were fantastic here in all their beaded glory.

MARCHESA SPRING 2008

MARCHESA SPRING 2008

It's surprising that red-carpet favorite Marchesa opted for a presentation at the Chelsea Art Museum, rather than a traditional runway show. It would have been nice to see how their eye candy of a collection moved on a runway. That said, given their gorgeous frocks, it was fitting that the models were setup on platforms showing-off looks that were truly wearable works of art.

CYNTHIA STEFFE SPRING 2009

CYNTHIA STEFFE SPRING 2009

The urban girl indulges her country club fantasy in the Shaun Kearney-designed Cynthia Steffe Spring 2009 collection. Amidst a mostly neutral color palette, ruffles, bows, rushing, graphic patterning, and pops of colors (indigo, pool, leaf, geranium), made for a fun, flirty collection that stuck to be being relatively casual.

ISAAC MIZRAHI CREATES INSECT FASHION NOT TO SWAT

ISAAC MIZRAHI CREATES INSECT FASHION NOT TO SWAT

Inspiration comes from all sorts of sights, sounds and experiences - fashion designers say that all the time. Apparently, Isaac Mizrahi took his from the insect world with a spring collection previewed Monday named "Swarm" and dresses in the spirit of dragonflies, beetles, even cockroaches.

YEOHLEE SPRING 2009

YEOHLEE SPRING 2009

Bernard Tschmui's Parc de la Villette in Paris, an Urban Park for the 21st Century, built on a vast site that was formerly occupied by slaughterhouses served as Yeohlee Teng's inspiration for her Spring Yeohlee collection this season.

TWINKLE BY WENLAN SPRING 2009

TWINKLE BY WENLAN SPRING 2009

Wenlan Chia showed her Jean Seberg-inspired Spring 2009 Twinkle by Wenlan collection on Monday, September 8th at The Salon at Bryant Park. Chia says that she hoped to capture actress Jean Seberg's idealistic school girl charm with her classic tailored looks, made over with sporty elements, and whimsical, ultra-feminine detailing bringing to light her bohemian artistry.

MARC JACOBS SPRING 2009

MARC JACOBS SPRING 2009

Certainly the most highly anticipated of all of New York Fashion Week's shows, Marc Jacobs' packed to the brim, star-studded (Victoria Beckham showing-off her new cropped hair, Jennifer Lopez...), Spring 2009 runway show was presented on a stunning Stefan Beckman-designed Hall of Mirrors runway.

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG S/S 2009

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG S/S 2009

Given the abundance of free-flowing, bohemian-style dresses and head adornments consisting of leather cords strung with feathers and flowers that graced the heads of the models strutting-down the runway, Diane Von Furstenberg's Spring 2009 collection should perhaps have been called Hippie Goddess instead of Rock Goddess (Furstenberg's collection was an homage to Diana Vreeland).

CAROLINA HERRERA S/S 2009

CAROLINA HERRERA S/S 2009

With all the people-watching going on at Carolina Herrera (I was seated right behind leopard-print-clad Ivana Trump and right next to Flavia Masson who was decked-out in gorgeous Francesca Visconti baubles, and not to mention the countless other celebs, socialites, and fashion heavyweights that all came to support the always glamorous Carolina Herrera), I was worried that it might be hard to stay focused on the runway. Thankfully with the surprising, but fabulous (given that the collection had a younger feel than usual), choice of Agyness Deyn strutting-out for the second look, staying focused on the runway was not a problem.

CHARLOTTE RONSON S/S 2009

CHARLOTTE RONSON S/S 2009

With Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson sitting front-row it seems that most of the buzz around Charlotte Ronson's Spring/Summer 2009 collections was not about the clothes. It's a pity though, because there were some wonderful pieces in Ronson's first show at the tents. The celeb-designer stayed true to her casual-indie- chic design aesthetic and presented some delightfully flirty dresses. Many of her pieces looked vintage-inspirited and had a playful-relaxed feel to them that perfectly fits her 30-something- and-under-bohemian-glam client demographic.

PATRICIA FIELD DESTINATION STYLE NEW YORK

PATRICIA FIELD DESTINATION STYLE NEW YORK

Patricia Field and David Dalrymple unveiled their Destination Style New York collection at The Edison Ballroom on Saturday, September 6th. The venue with its cushioned, black walls and disco balls was the perfect backdrop for the vibrant collection complete with all the sparkle, glitz, and glam that we've come to associate with Field. The drag-queen studded event with Andre J front row next to Patricia Field was a nice respite from the typical stiff fashion show. There was dancing and mingling while guests munched on grilled cheese, sliders, and crab cakes as they downed their champagne.

ROCK & REPUBLIC S/S 2009

ROCK & REPUBLIC S/S 2009

Short and tight best summarize the star-studded Rock & Republic Spring/Summer 2009 show (Mary-Kate Olsen, John Legend...). Though the collection had more of a fall than spring feel, with black dominating most of the looks, the uber-sexy wears were wearable (if you're tall, thin, and daring that is....), with just the right amount of ruffles, shine, and scruching. The jeans were amazing -- of course – and anyone who thought the skinny jean was on its way out has got another thing coming with skin-tight ones (of note one style called the "skinny bitch”), dominating the runway.

ALEXANDREW HERCHCOVITCH S/S 2009

ALEXANDREW HERCHCOVITCH S/S 2009

I know it's only the second day of Fashion Week, but I'm venturing to say that the Spring/Summer 2009 Alexandre Herchcovitch collection titled "Army of Love” will be my favorite of the season. Each and every one of the looks were so intricately beautiful that I literally left the show with chills. The Brazilian-born Herchcovitch, with his impeccable tailoring, is truly one of today's most talented and innovatively fashion-forward designers.

VERRIER S/S 2009

VERRIER S/S 2009

Ashleigh Verrier's Spring/Summer 2009 collection with its abundance of Swarovski crystals, chiffon, organza, and rich colors, conjured-up images of fairy tales, and princesses. The ultra feminine collection was utterly delectable and I couldn't take my eyes off the wonderfully bold pendant necklaces that complemented a select number of looks. The stand-outs for me were an ivory linen/needle lace fille tunic with pockets (pockets seem to be emerging as a big trend this season), and an ivory striped chiffon and argent trellis halter cocktail dress with Swarovski crystals. Both pieces were feminine and delicate, but there was a powerful sexy-ness to them.
