PROJECT RUNWAY 2009
Six collections were presented at the Project Runway showing – three decoy collections and three collections of actual finalists. Which are which remains to be seen, but all I know is that Leanne's collection stood-out as being the most deserving of the grand prize (with Korto coming in second and the four others far, far behind).
CALVIN KLEIN SPRING 2009
Architectural shapes, great coats and a lot of white: In the words of designer Francisco Costa, those are key elements of a classic Calvin Klein collection. It's probably not a coincidence then that Costa's spring collection, presented Thursday, was heavy on all those things.
ZAC POSEN GIVES A HARD EDGE TO SPRING
Zac Posen is hard-core when it comes to fashion. The spring collection he envisions - and he previewed Thursday - included some dresses with an underlayer of Perspex, a type of acrylic plastic, creating a shell around the hips.
The opening look on the runway of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was one of these tight top-stiff skirt number, this one in a tangerine color and elaborate beadwork. It certainly was a showpiece tailor-made for the catwalk.
NARCISO RODRIGUEZ GOES HIS OWN WAY FOR SPRING
If other designers have tapped spring as the season of the corset, Narciso Rodriguez isn't buying it. Rodriguez is a master of tight construction and the bustier-style bodice, but he veered from his signature in his newest collection, previewed Tuesday night during New York Fashion Week in front of Jessica Alba and celebrity loyalists Claire Danes, Julianna Margulies and Jessica Seinfeld - all of whom rarely miss a Rodriguez show.
RODARTE SPRING 2009
The Mulleavy sisters are the winners of the CFDA award, and although that's wonderful, the brighter the spotlight, the greater pressure there is - so when you create a buzz like the two sisters have done with Rodarte, you better live up to it.
The Rodarte show stood out in new York, and in the front row were Natalie Portman, Elijah Wood and Diane Von Fustenberg, and members of the fashion royalty that usually don't bother attending young designer shows
DIESEL DOES DENIM--AND MORE
Diesel is mostly about denim--straight legs, skinny legs, dresses and shorts. The reason for a show at the Bryant Park tents is to preview everything else. Diesel's spring collection for its Black Gold label, shown on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Monday, also included solider-style jackets with shimmery silver epaulets, sweatshirt-material genie pants, draped tank dresses and a bright aqua leather jacket. There were even dressy styles that were modeled after a men's tuxedo--a blousoned shirtdress with a beaded tuxedo-shirt front was among the best.
