I treasure beaded dresses from the French House of Adair, because each one has been unique. This one features a pattern of large stylized roses in the manner of Orientalism, then at the peak of popularity.
The pattern is executed in shades of rose, lavender, sapphire blue, pale turquoise, and copper. The beads are subtly variegated in color, the trademark of Adair designs.
Until the 1909-1910 seasons of the Ballets Russes in Paris, the color palette of high fashion had been under the influence Art Nouveau. The favored color combinations were complementary pastels like pale pink with dainty lilac or eggshell blue with lime green. After the enormous success of Leon Bakst's designs for the Ballets Russes, the fashion palette was turned upside down. Vivid and clashing colors became all the rage.
In this Adair masterpiece, the color palette is inspired and original. The semi-abstract design has a touch of the phantasmagoric. The design motif is beautiful, indeed, and unforgettable, because it is mysterious and slightly unsettling.
The dress is fashioned from luxurious black silk velvet; the soft drape of the fabric cannot be found in modern synthetic textiles. The style is straight to the dropped waist. The slightly gathered skirt is draped and open on one side below the hipline. The dress slips over the head in an easy-to-wear style.

The silk crepe dress features a blouson top, fitted hip-band, and softly pleated skirt. The dress closes on one side with hooks and snaps. The label reads "Made in France/Adair/Paris/4.Cité Paradis."
