I say it is a good idea to have longevity as it would make the forum simply look more beautiful.

And I agree with Echoes about that stretching page....it's quite annoying.

Howcome the page stretches for some but not for others?

Pictures posted one after another (like that user has done) move onto the next line - at least that's what it does for me - I see 3 rows of 2 pictures, with no page-stretching.

This post is over 5,000 pixels wide (about 6 times the normal width of a web page) due to poor practices by the poster. Had the poster been required to use the Attachment function, the page wouldn't be stretched so wide.

This problem could also be prevented by enabling width restrictions in the vBulletin Forum configuration panel.
or the OP could've just hit the enter button after each pic.

That would have been the best thing to do. Sadly, most people don't think of it.

I thought so. Firefox usually resituates the images while IE begs to differ which is what annoys me with IE. I don't even know why I continue to use it.

Actually, we already have a rule (look at the Community Rules ... near the bottom) that images should not be wider that 800 pixels to keep them small enough .... but, as you all know, not every member knows this.

We do a lot of editing for the scroll bar issue ... when pictures are run together in one huge horizontal block and we let the members know at that time to place a space between images and to keep them within the 800 pixel size. But we just don't have enough manpower to catch them all. It is very irritating, I know.

I think it's hard for users to remember the spaces because some don't realize that it's happening (it'd actually be interesting to do a poll or smth to see what browser the majority are using)

Yeah ... it is different on differne browsers. But if you get a Pm from a moderator, you will then know it's a problem for other members, so it's a good idea to always do it after that.

But ... back on topic ... we really want to know which is your choice.

Hotlinking so we can see pics really quickly but then loose them after a couple of weeks.

OR

Hosting them somewhere else ... which will probably slow down how fast we can see images from ongoin shows, etc. ... but then the images should be available for a long time, as reference.

Which do you prefer? We want everyone's opinion on this so we can decide how we will have to do it in the future.

Hosting somewhere else is my choice because archiving photos is much more important. Although I do like to hotlink Style.com photos because it's much easier, and I think their photos last longer. But I'm just going to upload photos in a hosting site from now on, to be safe.

Yep, Hosting for archival purposes. "Fast" is overrated.

But note that some image hosting services are flaky too, which brings me back to hosting here on TFS through the Attachments.

^ disallowing the IMG tags and posting everything as attachments would mean unlimited free attachment space for everyone. Is tFS prepared for that?
Note also that currently the maximum size of an attachment is 500 KB, a lot of scanned pictures are bigger than that. Endurance is good, but so is quality.
And another thing, attachements can only be seen by registered users, right? What happens with the spirit of sharing? the more people see it the better, at least that's what I think.

Hosting the pictures somewhere else seems the right option for me, and it's pretty fast. With the imageshack extension it's just right click- upload - copy, paste. Only to more clicks than to attach.
