Even though I really hate uploading my pictures to another site, because my computer gets awfully slow sometimes and it takes like 15 minutes to upload 5 HQs, but I go with HOSTING. I've got warned on another forum because I was hotlinking their images to tFS too so I guess I'll never do it again

I don't think hotlinking should be allowed.
I hate it when I check a thread and half the pictures are not showing.

Hotlinking :: Bandwidth Theft :: tFS Credits Policy

Some time ago there was a thread discussing tFS policy on Hotlinking and some possible changes. I haven't seen any updates on that recently.

Lately, I've been noticing certain posters who are posting (hotlinking) dozens and dozens of high file size images, some of them 5 or 6 times even though they are reposts. Page totals range into several megabytes each time the page is loaded (everytime somebody views or refreshes the page). This is nothing more than theft of bandwidth, plain and simple.

There is little, if any credit given to the original site. Usually it's a cryptic 2 or 3 letter abbreviation that does not identify the site itself to anyone unfamiliar with the abbreviation. Other times it just the word 'same' which may refer to a site credit one or two pages previous since they are creating mulitple posts within minutes of each other. To me, a proper credit is the FULL name of the website and the page on which it was found.

I just viewed one such thread that has about 60 pages of posts in the last 3 weeks or so. Most all of those pages contain pictures from 2 or 3 years ago that have been posted multiple times earlier in the same thread.

Reporting the threads or posts doesn't accomplish anything.

So, has there been any decision on how to handle these matters?

Somehow this got merged almost instantly. I really wanted this to be a separate new thread since it seems to be a growing problem.

Have you reported the issue? I had a look at the past 3 weeks worth of reported posts and I do not see any from you.

Thank you for your input It would be intersting to hear from more members, to see if crediting should be more specific...as well as get more feedback on the hotlinking issue..

No, because the policy as it stands isn't specific enough to cover multiple large file hotlinked images.

But see your PMs in a minute.

No that haven't been included in the policy..

However the practise has been to change hotlinked images to urls or delete the picture completely in cases when pictures have been reported as hindering a page to load properly / or made page loading very slow.

I also know that sometimes mods have themselves uploaded images via tFS etc when they seen great images they feel would be a shame to loose being hotlinked from sources know to change their urls.. but that is naturally not something that would ever be expected of a mod to do.

I agree with the idea of crediting being more specific. Some of the abbreviated credits I see here might be a little hard to figure out for the person who isn't familiar with certain websites that are frequently sourced for pictures. Just as an example, I saw a picture here credited to "mdc" and when I added ".com" to it, I ended up at the Boeing website. It would be great if the picture credit provided enough information that anyone who sees it will easily be able to find the source online (if the picture source is online).

i def think crediting should be more specific (the whole name of the website, maybe not necessarily with the .com)

i think copying and pasting the image codes from image hosting sides should be allowed (unless its forbidden on the forum/website u get it from) but not actual hotlinking

I like your crediting idea, fairy. It's more helpful for other users who are interested in capping from the same site.

This is how I feel as well, but I also think the photographer should be credited along with the website. For people interested in photography, it's invaluable to know names to search for when you see a picture you like.

However, the same could be said for stylists, makeup artists, hairstylists, etc. I suppose there has to be a limit; you can't expect people to list every person responsible for one photo.

For magazine or portfolio pics where the Photog's ID matters, that's fine, but most of the pics posted are from other websites or shopping sites where the Photog is unknown or uncredited to begin with.
