Good topic, Papa! I totally agree!! Many people don't think when they create thread titles and just put down thier first thought ... as if they were speaking to friends. But it certainly doesn't help a bit when you are looking or seaching for a certain topic.

When I know that a couple of threads are about the same subject, I sometimes merge them ... but if both threads have been running at the same time, sometimes it's not a good idea to merge if the conversations get intermingled and would no longer make sense. I also change a lot of thread names when those non-helpful thread titles pop up. But in the really busy forums, it's hard to keep up .. there's other issues that mods are dealing with ... so it doesn't always get changed.

If you see a couple of threads that you think could be merged sucessfully or should be re-named, feel free to report them to a mod who can make the changes, if appropriate.

Tips for starting new threads:

First and foremost, do a search to make sure that there in not already an ongoing thread.

Next, check the top of the forum for any pinned threads which sometimes contain specific rules for posting and/or starting new threads. Some forums, like Behind the Lens, Designers & Collections and Magazines, have a specific format that should be followed.

Then ... before starting that thread, think about what the title you are going to give it. Would you be able to use the search function and find it? Can you tell from looking at the title, what the thread is about?

In Paint and Skin & Body Care we often leave individual 'help' threads like those you mentioned up for a couple of day/ a week.. to increase member response, after that we usually merge/edit the thread title to something more searchfriendly.
Unfortunately I don't always have time to do the follow by merging a week later.. but every now and again there'll be spring cleaning were many such threads are merged and titles are edited.

There are many crap threads that get started because people around here don't read or have never read the tFS rules & guidelines...just another in a long list of reasons to make membership exclusive or limited...

That is very odd Claire.. I had a look at your settings.. and there doesn't seem to be a reason why you shouldn't be able to post a new thread..

If you still do not have the option of making a new thread, please let me know and I'll have a tech admin look into the issue.

Before you start a new thread:

You should use the Advanced Search option to find out (click on Search to find the Advanced Search ...link is on the upper right, in the dark bar) ... but be sure to ask it to search titles only and deliver results as threads to get manageable results. We ask that every member do this, before starting a new thread so it's something you need to know how to do, anyway. And that is really the only way to find out for yourself. We just have soooo many threads ... thousands!

Here's more detailed information about how to set your advanced search function so it always searches for threads, unless you want to search every post at tFS (there are literally millions .... ).
