Makeup Packaging that Breaks - Rant thread

I'm sure everyone who's ever bought makeup have tried it, having the lids etc break off. You might be thankful that the content didn't smash, but now you have to deal with a broken package. It's particularly annoying if the item is one that you use on the go.

I'm not 'rough' with my makeup (okay, I drop it from time to time, but shouldn't the containers stand that test?).

What do you do when it happens ? (Apart from the ugly DIY tape-jobs)

Can/Do you return the item ? (I know the return policy in America makes the customer king.. but since I'm located outside of the states I'm particularly interested in replies from those outside the US.. have you returned or tried to return an item because of this?)

Currently I have makeup in banged up packaging from the following labels:
  • Guirlain
  • CoverFx
  • Trish McEvoy
  • Shu Uemura
Know any makeup labels with indestructible packaging ?

I guess it didn't break, but I have cargo eye shadows that the lids don't close tightly. They come in a round tin if you don't know so a loose lid could mean it slips off in your drawer case or whatever. So I had to save the boxes and keep them in the box to keep the lid on. And of course it has crumbled into becoming a "loose" powder when it was originally pressed.

Also a lot of my urban decay eyeshadows have crumbled into loose powders. The containers didn't break though. I still save them when this happens b/c I like the colors but it's just so messy every time you open it.

eta: no I don't return stuff. I only would if it was never used or opened. I know it's ok but it just makes me feel guilty for some reason.

I've never had that happen with the single eyeshadows from MAC. But those holders of 4 eyeshadows where you just pop the shadows in.. the lid on that one is not sturdy..

I had my armani compact foundation's lid broken the day I purchased it from selfridges. They couldn't return it since it was opened and used (one use only)
Thankfully the powder didn't crumbled but I had to stick it with tape and I was so bummed out to have my armani case with stick tape all over it..

My shiseido compact broke! The lid disconnected and it's really irritating because it has that extra layer to separate the mirror from the powder, if that makes sense, so when I try to get to the powder it's all complicated.

i love urban decay but honestly, their packaging techniques aren't the greatest i've ever seen. they're too showy, less functional.

I find that cheaper make-up seems to be more sturdily packaged. My Rimmel, Constance Carroll, Stargazer etc. stays put, where my more expensive (Lancome, Clinique, YSL etc.) for some reason comes with a self-destruct mechanism.

I've stopped buying MAC 4 pan palettes for that very reason, they are so cheaply made they break in days.
