Avant-garde shoes

if anyone else has a great love for the not so mainstream shoe and has more of an avant-garde tastebud towards footwear this is the place to show them off.

these are some recent and past loves of mine. to me, what makes an avant-garde [classified] shoe is when it is the art form, it's not about being ugly, beautiful or outrageous but the sculpture itself. there are so many great ones out there I can't wait to see what is dug up from the past.

Those CDG shoes are cute lucky...I saw the lace up version at the store the other day.

Personally, I am always partial to Martin Margiela's shoes. I wouldn't necessarily characterize them as sculptural, so not sure if they fit with your definition. But I think they are very clever, often funny, and always (surprisingly) chic.

S/S 06, "fragile" pump

F/W 06, mud-stained wedge

S/S 07-- I love the plexiglas heeled sandals and the uber-chunky python almost-wedge

F/W 07, Silk covered wedge

And of course, the forever classic knee high tabi boot.

I remember your hunt for those mud-stained MM's...did you find them? they look so decadent and royal.
I wasn't sure about the sculptural criteria either, Im searching for a definition so suggestions would be helpful. does an avant-garde shoe have to be the product of an avant-garde designer? most will be by nature of the person. I don't always consider Balenciaga avant-garde but that particular shoe was on the fringe for sure just as Alaia and McQueen also push the boundries of the normal classification of a conventional shoe at times.

What about Westwood, Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann?

lucky, thanks for remembering. I did finally get my hands on them, although mine are a different color--faded purple with a slightly metallic, sandy brown "mud." I don't think the velvet version was produced.

I don't think we need to worry too much about defining avant-garde--it seems like we have a pretty good idea of what it is when we see it, anyway. Or maybe we will be able to deduce the definition from what winds up getting posted...

A few more:

For men, Raf Simons A/W 06, zip boots

Vivienne Westwood F/W 07, boots

A.F. Vandevorst F/W 07, platform lace up boot

The Margiela Flats were originally $525, but they were on sale, so maybe half of that.

I got 'em at Bergdorfs, so you might try there or Barneys. I know they had them too.
