Bare Midriff S/S 09

First noticed this in CPH at Bruuns Bazaar where I thought it was actually quite cute and wearable.. I'm not so fond of many of the looks in general, though.. Trend with high level of difficulty for sure

Jeremy Laing and 3.1 Phillip Lim

I seriously hope this doesn't catch on....but I have a feeling it will.

^ It's inevitable, there's always one trend per season that people pray doesn't catch on with the mainstream that winds up being huge.

This is fine for runway to create a look, but it almost always looks trashy imo. The only way I would want to see this being worn is with a really high waisted skirt so that all you have is a sliver of skin between the top and the bottom.

I can see hipsters doing this but I'm not sure it would be so popular generally. It's so unflattering and the era of the muffin top is still, unfortunately, seared into recent memory.

Agreed.

I think it's an amazing look ... but ONLY when the navel isn't visible.

good spotting Mette...i echo everyone's sentiments...this is sometimes, sometimes pulled off on the runway but i pray it doesn't trickle down to the streets....that would be a nightmare imo. i noticed it particularly at juan carlos obando where i thought it was really fresh and beautiful. probably because the tops are so interesting and well crafted...it makes the whole thing look a lot more sophisticated...

the little glimpse of midriff at jeremy laing is well done too imo... that outfit reminds me of something Carrie bradshaw would wear...actually come to think of it she pulled off quite a few midriff baring outfits didn't she?... so this is doable on TV and on the runway....

my personal nightmare is that cropped tops like those last 2 at alexander wang will become really popular....oh my can you imagine...

Oh.. I observed Rei doing this for the past seasons and was waiting to see if mainstream designers would let it pass or interpret it themselves eventually and I guess they chose the latter. There was recently a pic of Kate Moss out on the streets showing her midriff so I definitely think it will eventually take off. I can't say I hate it, I think there's always a level of 'visual danger' whenever a trend is entirely focused on showing off skin, such as this one, since it's bound to get abused by people who would pretty much take any opportunity to display their 'hotness', and usually these people tend to look everything but 'hot' but that's beside the point . I'm a firm believer that someone with taste and a sense of proportions can get away with anything.. so hopefully soon, we'll spot someone to prove my point.

great thread, mette!. nice to see your trendspotting eye back in action.

I can't say I like it as a trend and I already have a hard enough time finding shirts/sweaters/tops in general that are long enough for my torso.

it is kinda funny seeing this trend for ss09...
i been doing that kind of high waist bare midriff for ss08 and didnt think it would actually be a trend in ss09. i just had a hunch i wanted to show a little skin but not my belly button which is not very lovely. i didnt show as much as many of the runway looks but just a slit

I think Philip Lim showed it best.. a boxy cropped top with a full, high skirt. Similiar to the time Carrie wore the rainbow skirt and cropped top to Miranda's baby shower on SATC. I have no interest in seeing belly button.

great for runway, but bad for real life! people are going to show their midriffs while wearing tight tops and tight pants and just look trashy. the bare stomach thing is going to be like the ultra-low rise jeans with thong sticking out. oh the horror!!

Well How many times are we going to see the return of the bare midriff? I spent my teenage years in the early 90s in cropped tops so I'm totally past the "sale date".

In my opinion they look good on the catwalk and on skinny 15 year olds, but past that people should just pretend that there is no such trend.
