Tiered Strips

I've started to notice this pop up little by little in stores, on the red carpet and in some of the Holiday linesheets. Usually it's a dress or top made with narrow strips of fabrics, usually in different colors or using ombre (or giving the overall garment an effect similar to ombre). Examples:

I've seen more, but I can't remember where. I quite like it, depending on how it's done (not crazy about Vanessa Hudgen's dress though).

I kind of like it. I prefer it to the god awful multi tier ruffle trend of a few years ago.

Not feeling it. The ruffles are very unflattering. I tried on a dress at target that had the mini layers. It was a size 0 but I felt like a looked awkward with all the layers.

I personally love this, it's basically a type of tiered effect, but done in a much more streamlined way.

The thing with this is that since it's horizontal bands the silhouette needs to be pretty fitted to work. Breaking the body up into horizontal stripes is iffy as it is, so if the fit isn't tailored it won't do anyone any favors. On the other hand, if a woman had a more straight figure this would give the illusion of some curves (as evidenced by the models wearing them).

I think these would probably be more flattering since the pieces are one solid color instead of multiple colors that wind up separating the body into blocks (like that last dress posted, it's no different than wearing horizontal stripes).

I actually sort of like this trend, Phillip Lim has some great tiered skirts in his Fall 08 collection.

Lanvin does it better then Target thats for sure ha! Maybe my opinion has changed.

I'm used to seeing casual tiered skirts worn by femmes. I like ruffles and tiers. I just suggest that there aren't too many tiers to where the garment itself looks like total garbage. There has to be a sufficient number of tiers while not looking too outlandish or off-balance. Something like the fourth picture in Post #4 is what I'd deem acceptable. The fifth picture in the same post is actually a very lovely use of tiers for this non-symmetrical dress. Something like the first picture in Post #4 is what I'd deem unacceptable since the balance of that pencil skirt gets ruined. It's an uneven balance even if it was a black skirt.

I've loved ruffles for as long as I can remember (as long as there aren't too many), and the same goes for tiers.
