One brown dress, everyday, for a year:

Picked this up on Metafilter. Talk about pushing the limits of fashion!

from her homepage:

Is this a feminist thing? Probably. Also an art thing. Also a let's stop wasting time and money thing. But on a feminist note, let's stop agreeing that the best way for women (in particular) to "express themselves" is by purchasing new wardrobe items and putting together daily outfits.

what a great project! As much as I love fashion, I have often wondered how much it is a trap set out by economy making us buy so many new items and give old ones which are still perfectly useable away. On the feminist note, well, that it's overwhelmingly seen as women's interest speaks for it self.
I find it rather hard to defend fashion on a theoretical level, personally I just see it as one of my vices in which I indulge...

some of us actually ENJOY fashion and are ALSO pro women's rights...
they are not mutually exclusive..

you know what entered my head was .. how can this dress be practical for all ocasions i mean weddings ?? formals ?? cocktail parties ?? etc.
how anoud would you be if she showed up to your wedding and was in the photos in that dress. surely there are times when she must feel underdressed .. and if she doesnt then she must be truely unique.

I guess shes stressed her point but she seems a bit nieve as doesnt she realise men like fashion as well so this isnt a stand to feminism or whatever.

ok i sound so shallow in this post but ... oh well lol.

In a way i wish that i was that confident in my self that i could wear one horrid old brown dress and nothing else for a year. i admire her for having confidense in fact i guess im slightly jeleous but other then that nothing else.

I just found it entertaining. It's good that people make "statements" like this. One doesn't have to agree with them--else we're all in our little Mao suits--but the high cost and fickleness of fashion will produce reactions such as this. I really love fashion--on other people!--but I'm aware it's just a wrapper. Rather than approaching it as yet-another tired "feminist" issue, perhaps this particular fashion statement could be framed as a question of identity as just a human being, rather than a female being.

Speaking of Alaia, doesn't the designer himself live in black Chinese silk pyjamas?
