I believe he is referring to the use of materials or methods like sand, waxes, water/washing etc to give garments various kind of effects. for example the current collection has washed leather and waxed linen and cotton used in some of the pieces.
he has his own atelier in barcelona, I'm not sure to what extent his garments are produced there, but I know that is where he does all his experimentation, which seems to be his big passion.
