I've only seen the advertisements as yet (I don't imagine we'll be getting the brand here for quite some time), so I've never seen any of their products in person yet. I've also read an article on them, and it generally interests me... Producing basic clothing in good quality. Which would normally turn me off with it's dullness, but I don't mind what I've seen of theirs. I must admit that I mostly just like their wedges, combined with the short sock.

Jean Touitou APCs designer.

What are your signature designs? I am at a crossroads right now in terms of signature. Before, I thought the only dignifying signature was to be anonymous in such a way that would make me hugely visible. Now, I am willing to let it go and show very different and mixed obsessions, but very few of them. In other words: minimalism used to be for me a lot of anonymous things. Now it's a very few maximised items

What are your favourite pieces from any of your collections? There have been a few mistakes over the years, but all the pieces are my favourites

How would you describe your work? Waking up with a reason

What's your ultimate goal? Read, build houses, build family, sail

What inspires you? My past work and archives, some girls, some men too

Can fashion have a political ambition? I can't believe you're writing 'still'. Fashion has no clue of politics. It's all hype, poses, coteries, but not politics

What do you have in mind when you design Reaching the right proportion

Is the idea of creative collaboration important to you? It's fundamental. I could do no work without it. It's challenging and dangerous

Who has been the greatest influence on your career? MaybeCristobal Balenciaga, because of the way he decided to stop. And Chuck Berry, because he refuses compromises and is still alive

Which is more important in your work: the process or the product? Same thing to me. A wrong process can't lead to a right product. It would only be a gimmick

Is designing difficult for you, and if so, what drives you to continue? Designing is not exactly difficult. What is difficult is to be alive. To make the house work. That is what hard work is. Because it's boring. Once this is out of the way, you kind of enjoy the difficulty of designing

Have you ever been influenced or moved by the reaction to your designs? I've been influenced by my own reaction to my designs. Two years ago I found out what I was proposing was so boring, I knew I had to restart almost from scratch

What's your definition of beauty? Sorry, I can't answer. It might be a philosopher's job. I am into 'percepts' not concepts. It's too much for me

What's your philosophy? I'm not a philosopher. I have no philosophy. Maybe in 25 years I'll find out that I'm just cynical.

What is the most important lesson you have learned? There's no lesson I have learned that I did not know before being in fashion

Here's what I think of A.P.C. from a male customer's perspective:

A.P.C. is a great insider brand for those in the know, and for those who don't care about brands but care about quality. There's usually just enough trend in A.P.C. clothing, but not enough to mark its wearer as trendy. I see them as higher quality basics, where the fit can vary from easy to slim (because of their popularity with the japanese customer, I would assume), but it's never trendy tight (except for the jeans). If I see someone wearing an item of clothing that looks presentable but is so basic that I can't identify what it is, A.P.C. comes to mind. It's almost anonymous fashion, but it's not invisible. You can tell there's a certain level of quality, but the item itself may not be trendy, although it's likely that the wearer may be.

For years ( until now), there has been a caché in saying that you're wearing A.P.C., at least in New York. Not everyone knows it, but the people who do revel in that relative obscurity, as they don't want the clothing to advertise itself, but the wearer. The items themselves never stand out, but the brand identity of nonchalant hipness make the brand desirable. I think it may appeal to a straight male customer, for example, who is hip enough to wear Helmut Lang but either can't afford it or wants something more casual.

My two cents.

I think APC is good basics with a 'twist', cool style and good image.

Sophia Coppola buys usually jeans there. I wear an APC pale-rose turtleneck that has exactly the same colour as Karen Elson's skin, I mean, understated arrogance.. that's APC's Unique Selling Proposition, talking the Marketer's slang.

Their suits and shirts and some acessories are the strong point for me. Definetly not overpriced.

The A.P.C. campaigns always have the right attitude, because they're well-styled, but when you get to the store, the clothes are simply disappointing because they look kind of generic.

The quality is very good because everything's made in France, but this also makes the items quite expensive for an American market. The strong Euro doesn't help to bring the price down either.

The women's line is sometimes annoying because the designers just take the same fabric that they'll make a men's pant out of, for instance, and then make a shirt dress out of it, so the women's clothes are very masculine-looking.

In summary: It's a good line for decent quality basics.

I donīt see A.P.C. in tune with GAP or any other highstreet retailer... rather Chalayan or Margiela line 6. I think their collections have a good balance in between wardrobe basics and fashionable stuff that doesnīt pretend to imitate somebody elseīs designs like Zara or H&M.

Gotta disappoint you, most of the production is actually sourced-out, my Madras shirt from last season reads "Made in Rumania" and most of the knitwear comes from far east... still I canīt complain about the items Iīve bought so far.

REally? I used to buy the line a few years ago. They must have cheaped out as of recently on the production.
