Review:

"MILAN, March 1, 2001 By Armand Limnander

The hard-edged, almost austere look that Miuccia Prada recently championed has clearly become a major influence this season, so it's not surprising that her Fall collection continued to push forth a no-nonsense, pared-down aesthetic.

Working almost exclusively in dark gray, black and brown, Prada reworked some of the looks that first made Carnaby Street chic. Fur-trimmed, paneled coats with geometric fastenings worn over skintight leggings brought to mind a nouvelle Twiggy, as did the coquettish minidresses with bright orange trim. Steering clear of superficial connotations, Prada made sure to keep her collection varied. For every mod shift there was a long, pleated skirt, a flowing Empire-waist prairie robe or a smart capelet. A couple of copper-and-white swirl dresses, a plush everyday fur and several impeccable jackets spoke of understated cool, as did her all-important accessories. Patent Mary Janes and tall lace-up granny boots were worn with thick stockings, while enormous tan bags with extra-long straps swung nonchalantly at the hip.

By veering away from excessive decoration and facile status references, Prada succeeded in creating a perfectly fashionable anti-fashion wardrobe. "

i think it had a lot to do with all these other influential designers either resigning or leaving their respective houses that she got such huge momentum - if you look at precisely that time, tom ford was still ruling as the number one showman of milan fashion week and helmut lang was about to show in paris again after his time off in new york.

prada was already doing strong back then, but looking back on what it was back then to what it is now, i feel it was more classical, pragmatic clothing back then that brands like max mara or akris SHOULD have done whereas these days i see it more linked to aesthetics as comme des garcons or lanvin. She certainly wasn't as daring back then, certainly not in an obvious way.

thanks helmut!

very interesting, i can see that she had a clear aesthetic that's retained it's thread in all her collections...

a ladylike, almost librarian chic...but repressed sexuality underneath...

to me this collection is still very relevant and wouldn't be out of place contemporarily.

^^^^

Yes, I completely agree with what you're saying

Prada to me is the combination of Librarian/Art Galley Owner Chic with some kind of perverse understated sexiness thrown in!

I love this. It reminds me of what Jil Sander does really well now.
I miss when the minimalist-minded designers were part of the Prada Group.

Agree, very Jil Sander/new Calvin Klein/somewhat Balenciaga even. It's still totally relevant.

This is the first time I see it and I already love it! Wonderful simplicity of cutting and colours, plus my new fav dress!

This is so simple and elegant. The black dresses with mesh panels are perfect examples of stunning simplicity and still look relevant today. Most of the coats do as well.

I'm wondering, how/when did fashion get so OTT?
