15 months on since its inception, Studio Privè has expanded its stable of six designers to include three more new talents. The closing of the Singapore Design Festival will see U’tter, N.ncha.nt, Fake, Demisemiquaver, iamwhoiam, Tangle, and new additions, Mad Dog’s Gang Men, Pettifogr, and Yoviajogia, presenting a mix of men’s and women’s collections. The Autumn/Winter’07-08 collection during this second presentation from Studio Privè is the culmination of 5 months of work from the designers, signaling the end of its first edition. Following the Showroom’s previous showing, these new collections promise more in terms of viable, differential designs (from themselves as well as market staples) and multifaceted sartorial ideas in a brazen show of independent confidence.
One of the main impetuses for Studio Privè was to offer an alternative platform to new designers and talent to not only showcase their work by way of a showroom, but also have access to counseled help on matters of design, promotion, and retail trade connections. It is both grooming ground and talent hot housing. The participants are fresh designers who have every intention of launching their own labels. Through Studio Privè, they are privy to resources that are otherwise unavailable to new designers.
I tried on the parachute poncho thingy (the second last one) at Front Row. It was lovely. Weighty fabric that drapes wonderfully and a million ways to wear it. Price is very decent too.
i enjoyed studio prive's work for this season. last season's pieces looked good on the runway but did not impress when handled; this season's is much much better. in particular i was drawn to iamwhoiam, very frutey.

i only manage to see last season on pictures and this's on runway but not in their studio or shop yet.

no platform. very short runway. no seats!!! have to stand?!!!
a few pieces are not bad. fabrics are uninspiring. cotton?? all the way.
local designers needs more budget and more effort.
last year's and this year's shows are about the same.
studio prive designers need to find their own style.
instead of coming up with similar looking clothes.
one or two designers' clothes look cheap.
but there are one or two that's worth a second look.
to summarise what ive said..in order for local designers to even survive,
singapore needs more fashion consumers and audience. market is too tiny.

It was retailing for less than S$500. New stuff coming in every now and then.
Micht - I don't think having a small market in singapore is an issue. What they should aim for is to pitch their designs to an international audience. This is definitely a step in that direction.

i doubt the designers have enough budget unless their pieces are really doing well and there are overseas buyers.
most of them are too influenced by jonathan seow i guess and for the every seasons of summer in singapore i doubt people here can offer much.
i think some of them are carving out their own solo collection already but then again, it's probably it again.
everythng is about money and budget but i still think if u have the ideas, u can always find good investors who have the money.
but let's think of rick owens. he has an amazing collection with sheer jersey right? and jun takahashi had a collection of deconstructing and reconstructing cotton.
but anyhow i would love to see more boots wearer here.
small market is def the biggest issue
fashion is creative business. business is making money.
in order to reach international audience, they have to acquire a certain standard in terms of design, marketing it and quality of their products. from what ive seen, they still need more time. ALOT more time. who wants to buy a $500 top manufactured in singapore or somewhere in southeast asia when they can get a similar looking one with better quality made in paris or italy? a smart investor would rather invest in a good paris or newyork based designer than a singapore based designer..because it all comes down to bigger country=bigger demand=larger revenue. if i am an investor looking for asian designers to invest in, i'll head to china or bangkok and head for their local talent. because intelligently speaking, china IS a very big market. and bangkok has very good support from their local people.whereas singapore's market is almost not there for local designers to survive. but studio prive is a good start. maybe 10 or 20 years down the road, we'll see people actually buying fashion from our local designers
