"She Is Queen Undisputedly of Mind and Body" (and of alternate guitar tunings, I might add)
I think it's about time that she got a thread.
So to all of you Joni admirers, what are your favorite albums and songs by her? How did you get to know her music? Healthy discussions highly encouraged.
p.s. Mods, I tried to search for her but no threads came up. Please feel free to delete this topic if one already exists.
let's start with:
California (since i'm from cali)
love (reminds me of tell him by lauryn hill)
amelia
answer me my love
big yellow taxi
and all i want...
JONI! Prob. the most famous person to come from my province, Saskatchewan. I don't even think she was born there, came when she was two, but we have claimed her as our own. A lot of her music really deals with being canadian, a westerner and a prairie girl. She's brilliant
What surprises me about her music is that it defies categories (especially in her latter albums) and that it is timeless. When I listen to her albums, it seems as if they don't have any decade or period associated with it.
"Hissing of Summer Lawns" is way way way ahead of its time. Up to now, I think "The Jungle Line" is stll being mixed in clubs all over.
This comes from being unafraid to explore or experiment beyond the boundaries normally expected. She always challenged the musical "norms", worked with different artists, breaking musical barriers, etc., and this have made her produce the music that I adore.
I don't have pictures of her, but she is quite a nice dresser too.
Write me a royal-blue parchment poem
Draw me a royal-blue lady like me
Draw me a smile
That's a lot like my own
And make my eyes flowers
And make my mind see
I will weave melodies only for you
And color them silver and saffron and blue
Build me a window to watch everything
Leave it unshuttered so nothing slips by
No season, no sorrow, no wonderful thing
No raspberry, strawberry sun in the sky
I will bring music and marsipan bars
And live deep inside you
Wherever you are
Teach me the ways of the Gemini twin
Show me the love that he says without words
Bring me his laughter again and again
The silence is singing, the quiet is heard
I will find harmonies waiting unsung
With two souls to sing them
Where once there was one
I had a Joni Mitchell period some years ago where I listened to her all the time and when I had song lessons, I always wanted to sing her songs. I don't really listen much to her anymore, though I still like her music of course.
