The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society will always be an all-time favourite of mine. Every song is a classic.

Just noticed this - love the Kinks!!! Village Green Preservation Society is a special album and definitely my favorite by them. It's one of those albums that is just amazing from start to finish. My favorite song by them though, would be Waterloo Sunset which is from Something Else. Others i like (and i will miss many, i know...) Wicked Annabella... Picture Book... Oklahoma USA... Lola... Starstruck... Where Have All The Good Times Gone...

One thing that sets the Kinks apart from their contemporaries (IMHO) is the lyrics - they wrote good catchy songs with amazing, thoughtful lyrics. I remember reading somewhere someone commenting on the Kinks (I think it was Peter Buck from REM), and he mentioned that he visited the area referenced in "Waterloo Sunset" and was shocked at what a dump it was, but then impressed with the sentiment that went into the lyrics. "I don't feel afraid, as long as i gaze on Waterloo sunset, i am in paradise." - it's all in perception, and that isn't learned.

I just got a Best Of type thing. Really good, favourites are just the obvious ones really. I was actually quite surprised that I knew so many songs. Very very very good.

the kinks are an AWESOME band and lola is like THE best song ever....the cool thing is as well my mate is called lola and i enjoy refrencing her to the song telling here that she is a transexual stripper!!!
