Live 8 2005

LONDON, UK Wednesday Jun.1.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- In a press conference yesterday (May 31), activist and musician Sir Bob Geldof announced the details of Live 8 and confirmed a star-studded lineup that includes U2, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, the Dave Matthews Band, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and more.

Five free concerts will be held around the world on July 2, prior to the G8 Summit on July 7 in Gleneagles, Scotland. The Live 8 concerts are set to take place across multiple venues including London's Hyde Park, Philadelphia's Museum of Art, Paris' Palais de Versailles, Berlin's Brandenberg Gate, and Rome's Circus Maximus.

Some of the artists on board for London's Live 8 show include U2, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Madonna, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Annie Lennox, REM, Joss Stone, the Killers, and Keane.

Among the artists confirmed to play Philadelphia are Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, Sarah McLachlan, the Dave Matthews Band, Jay-Z, Kaiser Chiefs, 50 Cent, Rob Thomas and Keith Urban. Will Smith will host.

The Paris lineup includes Jarmiroquai, Craig David, and Andrea Bocellis, and the Berlin show features Brian Wilson, Lauryn Hill and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Duran Duran, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Jovanotti are confirmed for the Rome concert.

Live 8's goal is to get people to put pressure on the leaders of the world's richest and most powerful countries to end extreme poverty in Africa. Geldof explains, "The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if tens of thousands of people show them that enough is enough. By doubling aid, fully cancelling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa, the G8 could change the future for millions of men, women and children."

The G8 leaders include George Bush (US), Tony Blair (UK), Jacques Chirac (France), Gerhard Schröder (Germany), Silvio Berlusconi (Italy), Paul Martin (Canada), Junichiro Koizumi (Japan) and Vladimir Putin (Russia).

Live 8 will be televised around the world, and AOL will broadcast all the concerts live on the internet. Tickets to the London show will be distributed through a mobile phone text contest. The other venues will not require tickets. Details on how to attend those shows will be announced soon.

This thread needs revived. Who is going?

The London one sounds like the best bet... goodness. I would have thought about catching a plane to Philly for the weekend to see it (and support the One foundation), but looks like I'll be vacationing elsewhere over the 4th of July.

I really really hope this is a huge success, like Live Aid was.

i really want to go on the march being organised for the day of the summit but i dont think i would have the money to get up there. although this seems strange living so close to scotland

i was disgusted when i found out that people were selling their tickets on ebay. im glad that ebay decided to take down the sales but its still disgusting to think that they were so lucky to win the tickets were free and all they can think is about the money

^ I know, I couldn't believe it. That's just an example when something that's supposed to be great and for a good cause is turned into a money-maker by the wrong people.

yeah trying to highlight the plight of africa and the debt. and they just want to make money out of it! these people are beyond me i dont understand how they can do that and not have any empathy.

i wouldnt mind if they donated the money they made to the cause. but i doubt this highly if they are willing to sell the tickets in the first place. it just proves people think of themselves and have no altruistic feelings.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more response to this thread. I was so angered by the ebay sellers-I'm glad they were bombared with emails and that bidding on them was ridulous so they couldn't of sold them.
