If air played backup for Brian Wilson, it might sound something like Joy Zipper. This Long Island-bred band, featuring Tabitha Tindale and her boyfriend, Vinny Cafiso, can understand the comparison to that French electro-pop duo - they toured Europe with Air last year - but allusions to the Beach Boys initially had them stumped. "We hadn't heard 'Pet Sounds,"' says Tindale, 30. "We just knew 'Surfin' Safari."' Joy Zipper's "American Whip" seems as sacharine as "Little Deuce Coupe" until your ears prick up to dark lyrics about Alzheimer's, psilocybin and madness. It won't be long before they are hip with the California girls: their track "Baby You Should Know" is now getting play on "The O.C."

The songs of Keren Ann are deliciously gloomy, even if they are not intended to be downers. "They are melancholic, but that doesn't mean they're sad," insists the 31-year-old Dutch-Javanese-Russian-Israeli singer. Keren Ann divides her time between Paris and New York, and the smoky, pensive lo-fi ballads on her album "Nolita" sound as if they were born on a rainy afternoon spent chain-smoking Gauloises and journal-scribbling at a cafe - all wistful lyrics, almost inaudible purring and dreamy string arrangements. Dusan Reljin Sharin Foo | The Raveonettes
For nostalgists who long for Everly Brothers 45's and diner jukeboxes, the Raveonettes tweak "American Graffiti"-era rock with fuzzed-out surf-guitar riffs. Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner, vocalists and guitarists, grew up in the Danish countryside listening to American standards by Elvis and Buddy Holly, and to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. "He wrote these classic songs in such a simple way," says Foo, a Nordic stunner whose vintage 50's look earned her muse status with the designer Luella Bartley. While the Raveonettes pay respect to rockabilly on "Love in a Trashcan," it is their 60's girl-band harmonies that have captivated fans, most notably in their electro-pop cover of "My Boyfriend's Back." Eleanor and Matt Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces are an acquired taste. The lyrics on their albums "Gallowsbird's Bark" and "Blueberry Boat" sound like pure jabberwocky; the music suggests a child hacking away at a keyboard. But work the repeat button and you will quickly understand why countless geeky bloggers can't get enough of the Chicago-born siblings. (Starring in this season's Miu Miu campaign, Eleanor has attained cult status in the fashion world.) As Matt romps through a hodgepodge of genres - ragtime, electronica and freak folk - Eleanor rambles on about Baku, dexedrine and Nissan. For their new album, "Rehearsing My Choir," they brought their 83-year-old grandmother, Olga, a choir director at her church, into their quirky quorum. Is it not kind of insulting to female singer-songwriters that they only get media coverage in a fashion editorial.
I don't see John Lennon, Elvis and Brian Wilson with vacant expressions posing in Valentino jackets for fashion editorials by some unheard of journos.
I agree, its stupid that this is one of the few ways for them to get publicity. When I clicked on the link I expected to get a nice long article about people such as Feist and Regina Spektor, not just four pictures and short blurbs and the prices of designer clothes.
I also don't really think they neccesarily chose the best and brightest...

Funny, I specifically was looking for Regina Spektor, as well. Nice.
I don't really think any of the above aside from Keren Ann are even really 'singer songwriters', at least not by the way I define the word (a solo artist).
