Diane von Furstenberg Sues Forever 21

I hope this belongs in this thread. You can see pics of the dress at the link below.

Diane Von Furstenberg Sues Forever 21

You may remember that last week we posted about this Forever 21 Dress and how it had similarities to Chloe's wallpaper-esque black and white trend of 2005. Then, our good friends over at Shopdiary pointed out that it had in fact, been originally designed by Diane Von Furstenberg who in turn, is accusing Forever 21 of directly coping her "Cerisier" shift dress. Confused yet? Well, now it seems that the folks at DFV have had it with chain companies taking creative liberties with their work and have filed a lawsuit against Forever 21 for copyright infringement. The lawsuit also extends to their Aubrey design. At the same time, why just single one company out? DVF could very well sue everyone for copying their creations. We shall keep you posted on the outcome. [Via WWD]

if the chloe dress knocked off DVF first, why did they sue them as well?

Probably greed. But I'm confused...retail shops actually send scouts to the fashion shows to see what is hot and what is not. And that basically means copying the shapes and patterns but at a budget price. This has been going on for decades...I see so many knockoffs (and I'm not talking about imitation clothing merely very closely inspired) on the High Street I guess they're just picking a bigger target? I have no clue. That dress makes my eyes hurt.

^ yeah, that dress hurts my eyes too. However, would it be the actual dress that is hurting my eyes or the fact Lindsay Lohan is wearing it. Or maybe both....

yeah, im sure forever 21 has more money than chloe, they are huge. but to me, it just weakens their case. its fine when a more expensive company copies them, but not a cheaper one

I don't like the yellow version of the dress....

Whatever. I can't lie, I LOVE Forever21 and honestly, Forever21 could stand to lose the money. Half the clothes on their website sell out in days.

I heard somewhere that Gwen Stefani was also suing Forever 21 for ripping of LAMB and Harajuku Lovers. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

As long as forever 21 isn't putting "DVF" or "LAMB"....or "MJ"..."CHLOE', etc. They can't sue for forever 21 having some pretty good 'knock off' designs. Most people that shop at Forever 21 can't afford real DVF and probably dont know who/what/wear diane von furstenburg is anyway....

Imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery, blah blah blah.

Shopping at a less expensive store does not mean that you are not knowledgable on these fashion designers.

I'm a college student who is majoring in fashion design (which has to be one of the most expensive majors, besides art), I don't have money to thow away on a $500 dollar DVF dress, when I can get it for $24.95 at Forever21. There's a reason why designers like Prozena Schouler, Stella McCartney, Zac Posen, Alexander McQueen and dare I say it...Madonna, have gotten into designing for the better wear category. There's nothing wrong with looking like a million bucks, when you have only spent a couple of dollars.

Seriously, what is Diane so worried about? No one is going to buy it anyway!

Hmmmm, love Forever 21. I bought five pieces there for $80, how awesome is that?

One shirt at Urban Outfitters was $40 and it wasn't even that cute. Rip-off.

Doesn't, like, every budget-priced store take cues from designer pieces? I mean, you see a million Chloe-imitations at Penny's. Isn't this the norm?

Have they compared the dresses side-by-side? Maybe Forever 21 wavered the design a bit. Eh, who knows.

I shop at forever 21 as well. On a weekly basis. But the point I think I was trying to make is that most people that shop there aren't buying these peices because they are obvious designer knock offs. They're buying them because they're cute and superrrr cheap. Everyone 'knocks of designers', forever 21 just has a faster turn around.
