'I have never read a book': Victoria Beckham

12:00 AEST Sun Aug 14 2005
AFP
LONDON (AFP) - Former Spice Girl singer Victoria Beckham, wife of England football captain David, confessed she has never read a book, a newspaper said Sunday.

Despite struggling for a hit record for some time, Victoria Beckham said she never had a spare moment to leaf through anything more challenging than fashion magazines.

The Sunday Mirror tabloid revealed the shock admission after seeing a forthcoming edition of high society magazine Chic.

The confession is all the more startling given that it would appear to include her own autobiography, "Learning to Fly", and that of her husband, "My Side".

"I haven't read a book in my life. I haven't got enough time. I prefer to listen to music, although I do love fashion magazines," she was quoted as saying.

While her Real Madrid midfielder husband's global popularity shows no sign of waning, Victoria Beckham is now trying her hand in fashion circles.

"I know what other women think about him and I say to myself, 'He's very handsome, he dresses well, he's wonderful with children and he has an enormous heart'", she told Chic on the legions of women out to get their hands on her husband.

"I'm not jealous. When people look at him, I think it's because he's very good."

Though it doesnt suprise me - neither of the Beckhams are exactly intellectual heavyweights. David wore a t-shirt that someone had sent him a few years ago that had the face of a very prominent nazi - Hermann Goering I think - on it because he didnt have a clue who he was and as it was a freebie ( freebies! the Beckhams!Never!) He had to issue an apology to the Jewish community esp. as he has some Jewish ancestory himself. They've certainly never read a history book then!

Victoria Beckham would do well to read everything Edith Wharton ever wrote, but especially House of Mirth and The Custom of the Country.

Thackaray's Vanity Fair wouldn't hurt her, either, and hey, it even shares the name of a fashion magazine.

I imagine someone asked her: "Hey, have you read Vanity Fair"? And she would answer: "But of course, every month, daaahling!"

Haha, well, maybe it takes a lot of time for SOME people to read books. It must be really CHALLENGING to think about someone else than herself for the three-seven whole hours that it takes a normal person to read a book. Good lord, she REALLY works on being the stupid airhead trophy wife these days. At least a long long time ago she seemed like fun...

The fact that she admitted it the way she did just goes to show that she has a warped sense of *coolness* I'm sure she expects pple to say "she's never read a book? Aww, that's sooo cute!"

She must reckon that people will think it's cool that she has never read a book and she still managed to get to where she is today. All I can say is that it confirms that she is a ditzy air-head who only knows how to pout and pose.

If a guy I was dating said that to me, I would not know what to do. I think it's really important! I'm attracted to people who read a lot.

I remember once when she was on a MTV show, someone asked her what the last book she read was, and she said, "I don't really read...ooh! I'll tell you what I read last....Jamie Oliver's cook book. He's great!"

I'd say I'm attracted to people who at least read a lot sometimes. It's true that if you read all the time you don't get anything done, so I don't think you have to have a book glued to you in order to be cool. But like, errr, the people I've met who've never read a book in their lives are people who are - seriously - not worth knowing. It just shows they have no power of concentration or ability to think abstractly, even at a low level.
