This is hysterical. I'd ask what's wrong with these people, but we already know: Scientology.
Quote:
If Tom Cruise's recent public displays weren't evidence enough, Scientologists Jenna and Bodhi Elfman prove that they, too, are willing to go to great lengths to defend their religion.
Indie film director John Roecker tells TMZ he was walking to his car with a female friend in LA's trendy Los Feliz neighborhood last Sunday when he was approached by a shirtless man and a tall blonde. "Hey, man, you're making fun of my religion," said the stranger angrily.
Quote:
According to Roecker, whose encounter was first reported on LA's KROQ-FM's Kevin and Bean Show, the invective started to fly after he made several references to Scientology theology and its reported central tenant, the story of Xenu.
Roecker says Jenna repeatedly said "What crimes have you committed?" and began screaming at Roecker, "Have you raped a baby?" as motorists on Los Feliz Boulevard drove by in snarled traffic.
Regarding the article and the man's teeshirt, I know Scientologists aren't alone in viewing being called gay an insult (or being gay as an unacceptable thing), but it still makes me feel very uncharitable towards them.
I agree with the shirt on Travolta (and think JT is a pretty swell guy all around) - but in my opinion Cruise's problems are much, much more complicated and screwy than simple homophobic self-loathing.

i dunno about this...i mean i don't support scientology at all but...it's just rude to mock peoples' religious choices. and that t-shirt was really immature.

With all the reading I've done about Scientology it's really REALLY difficult for me to view them as an actual religion. Not when Hubbard was a diagnosed schizophrenic who believed he was the anti-Christ, who believed that Christ was a violent pedophile, who performed forced abortions on his wife, who implemented known brain washing techniques into their rituals, who believed that anyone who isn't physically/mentally perfect and a scientologist is subversive, who was open with his intent of scientology being nothing more than a scheme to see how much money he could make and how many people he could dupe, etc.
And I can't get over the hatred they spew towards gays, the mentally ill, mentally challenged, autistics, and others. Anyone who is "less than" or not one of them, is less deserving of life and happiness and a place on this earth in their mind because they are not as elite, enlightened, intelligent, and as perfect. The Nazis had a similar outlook. I don't really feel compelled to be tolerant of them either

I don't see how any of that is more weird than a few other major religions I could name...
I thought this thread was going to be about spontaneous human combustion.

Which is why I'm pretty much agnostic. Scientology seems to take it quite a bit further into offensive looney-toons territory though, at least on the face of things.

I'm sorry I got your hopes up I agree, that would be a much more interesting story

Bizarrely, Roecker also says that the Elfmans had a young, twenty-something male companion with them whom they continually instructed to move away and cover his ears whenever references to Xenu were made.
Is that like 'using the lord's name in vain' or something?
I had a very religious friend who'd slap me everytime I cursed using the word God ah the memories....
Moral of the story: the crazies of Scientology are just like the crazies of any other religion.

My personal opinion about Scientology is that it's corrupt and a joke, "Celebrity Center" but it's offensive to wear a shirt, hold a poster, say, act, whatevaaa if it is being rude/making fun of somebody's religion. You wouldn't dare see someone walking down the street wearing shirts with rude slogans about Jews, Christians, Muslims, because it's politically incorrect. The only religiously acceptable shirts that I can see are the "Everybody loves a Catholic/Jewish girl" from Urban Outfitters (like the Irish/Asian/Latin ones) because they aren't offensive, they're identifying oneself with their religion, and not saying something completely rude and offensive to anothers religion. I don't understand Scientology, and it annoys me, but still, it's a religion none the less.

I dont particularly appreciate gay being used as an insult, either...
I know it may seem that way but I really don't think it was being used as an insult. The t-shirt has a photo of Tom Cruise from the 80s looking particularly....well....80s, so the "gay" caption is basically stating that he should admit that he's gay because no one really believes he's hetero! Its kind of a big roll of the eyes to Tom. He's in the closet and he's a total phoney! If he would just admit to it!
