Jennifer Lopez Hitches a Ride on Adoption Bandwagon?

J-Lo latest star to join queue to adopt

Actress Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are planning to adopt a baby from Puerto Rico.
The couple, who married in June 2004, are always gushing about how much they want to start a family, but they haven’t had much luck so far.
There have been lots of reports that J.Lo has suffered a miscarriage in the past few months, and some newspapers suggested she was receiving IVF treatment to help her conceive.
Jennifer, however, has denied both of these claims.
Puerto Rico is the destination of choice for the loved-up pair as Jennifer, 37, feels that she won’t come under as much criticism as Madonna because the baby will have the same cultural heritage as her and Marc, 38.
A source said: "Jen and Marc are dying to have kids but it just doesn’t seem to be working for them.
"Jen realises she’s not getting any younger, so they’ve jointly decided that adoption may be the answer to their prayers. They’ve had some very serious conversations about it and have decided the best place to look is Puerto Rico as Jen and Marc’s parents were both born there."
The couple have started the process by researching orphanages in the area.
They realise it will take a while but that doesn’t bother them as they want the fuss surrounding Madonna’s adoption of baby David from Malawi to die down first.
The source added: "Apparently there’s a lot involved, even if you’re J.Lo. She wants to check out orphanages to make sure the one she choses is reputable and that it does something for the community.
"She doesn’t want to get burned like Madonna did so she wants to really understand the adoption laws of the country so nobody can contest it afterwards.
"Jen and Marc hope that by the time the adoption goes through all of the intense negative coverage of Madonna’s adoption will have died.
"They see their actions as different because they want to adopt a baby with the same cultural heritage as theirs."
In January last year J.Lo spoke openly about her desire for kids, saying: "I want a baby as soon as I possibly can. I’d be so excited to find out I’m pregnant. I just know it’s the right time. "Things are incredibly good. A baby would be just so perfect but we will just have to wait and see. Everyone must keep your fingers crossed for me."

That's great

I never understood why people got so mad when Madonna adopted her baby. What matters is the child and if they are being put into a good home, then I don't see the problem

Considering that she's reportedly been trying desperately to have kids for a while now, I truly believe that her motives for adopting are 100% pure.

As much as I love to go after celebs (and believe me, I do) I can't rag on J.Lo for this.

I don't really get why the child should have the same cultural heritage as the parents who plan to adopt it. My aunt adopted two beautiful girls from India, I just don't see the problem in that.

^i don't think that anyone is saying there is a problem with adopting a child with a different cultural heritage. it's just that adopting a child with the same heritage might make it easier for others to accept the adoption as the child would be perceived to have an easier time assimilating into the family etc.

i hope j.lo is able to adopt without any problems. it sounds like she has been trying to have a baby of her own and that she would give the child a loving home.

Adoption is not a 'bandwagon'. It is a valid choice for anybody. For me if I ever wanted kids, I would adopt for a million reasons. I could never criticise anyone, even Madonna for it. Although if I had been Madonna, I would have shut up and kept off the TV stations.

That's rubbish. No one has ever had a problem with my ex-boyfriend beeing from Korea, not his parents, his family, anyone. He didn't have problems fitting in at school. Neither do my 3 Indian cousins. No one has had ever had any problems accepting that they are adopted and look different from us pasty white Danes. I just don't see any reasons at all for going through such hassle to adopt a baby of your own "cultural heritage".

I really think it sounds like someone is having racial issues

On a sidenote, I don't think that all these celebs suddenly adopting children should be considered a trend. I think that people are becoming more aware of the fact that it is an option, and I think that is just swell. In Denmark, though, people have been adopting from especially from India and Korea in 30 years. So it's not excactly big news.

I agree.... with all of what you've said.

Also, I could have sworn Jennifer was pronounced pregnant a couple of months back. But I guess it was just false news. Her and Marc have been traveling tons and have been attached at the TomKat hip.

That's not fair, you know it's a double standard for celebrities, look at all the crap Madonna has gone through for adopting David, all the crap Angelina went through adopting her children. Do you ever see Lionel Richie getting slammed for adopting? Uh no.

It's made into a much bigger deal when people with fame adopt internationally and THAT is what Jennifer means, she means that people won't accuse her of jumping onto a bandwagon because Puerto Rico is her second home, it's where her family is from, she knows the country, she speaks the language and therefore it's more akin to a domestic adoption which people don't seem to have a problem with. (by people I mean the mass media)
