Was Nick Lachey being watched in the months before he and Jessica Simpson divorced?
Sources say Jessica's manager dad, Joe Simpson, was mighty curious about what his son-in-law was up to during the seven-month separation before the marriage officially ended June 30.
He particularly wanted to know what Lachey was doing on a night last spring when both Nick's soon-to-be girlfriend, Vanessa Minnillo, and Jessica's friend and former assistant CaCee Cobb were all in the same nightclub. "Joe called the club people after hearing Nick was there and demanded to see the security videotape," says an insider. The club declined to cooperate. According to the source: "Joe was looking to incriminate Nick. He told the club, 'If you ever want to see my daughter there, you'll give me what I want.'" A rep for the Simpson camp dismissed the story as preposterous.
I will be your father baby, put your tiny hand in mine, I will be the one who loves you...til the end of tiiiiiiimmmmmeeee

I'm not surprised that Joe Simpson wanted to get dirt on his daughter's soon-to-be ex husband....what I'm wondering though, is why he feels like he needs to have leverage against Nick? Does Jess have some dirty little secret Joe is afraid Nick will spill to the world?
(I mean, Joe being a bit of a pervy weird dad is already a given so there must be some other dirty little secret, haha).

Well I'm not sure, but if they weren't legally separated and Nick was found cheating, it might mean that Jess would have to give him less money. This is all speculation on my part, maybe someone who actually knows the law could give their thoughts.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Ever thought of a career in law?
I also like VainJane's theory about a "dirty little secret". It makes things way more interesting than they probably really are.... Joe Simspon sounds like quite a character. Next time Jess gets married, her groom needs to say, "I do....unless your father tries to jump in bed with us!"
did anyone else get confused because the title of this thread said "nick at night?"
I posted this, but I got confused when I read "Nick at Night" on the headline of the article! I was like, "Oooh! I love Nick at Night. Guess Joe Simpson is a "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" fan too!!!"
They play FPOBA on 'Nick at Night'? Gawd, is it really that old? I remember when I was a kid and they played Mary Tayler Moore, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Get Smart on 'Nick at Night'.

Yes they do! I remember the days of I Love Lucy and the shows you mentioned above. Now it is Rosanne, Fresh Prince, Full House.... I feel elderly!

I was particular to Mister Ed myself. A man, his talking horse, and the man's wife. It was absolutely surreal and innocent fun if you were a kid and completely perverse if you're an adult. Apart from the sight gags, it's all human nature & the innuendo of your own dirty mind which makes it funny. One could suggest the worst in a show kids could watch. You didn't even need to watch it for it to be funny, as old radio show writers were responsible for it. You could be in the kitchen washing dishes and it'd be funny.
I still haven't seen a moving image of Nick or Jessica, nor heard any of their songs. But I may need to go looking for 45 year old episodes of Mister Ed.

I think Meg is right. Joe Simpson is a business man so he would want to protect his daughters money. Either she did something or he just wanted to keep Nick from bad mouthing her to the press and ruining her sweet girl next door image.
^but their divorce is final. i just think joe is insane, and we need not quetion it.

What I find funny is Joe Simpson is the one who demanded there be no pre-nup, because at the time they were married, Nick was making more money. Then, once they separate, Papa Joe has issues with the idea of community property.
