Why be a royal doormat Kate Middleton?
November 13, 2007
From: Herlad Sun
Royal wannabe Kate Middleton has single-handedly booted the women's cause back to the Dark Ages by quitting her job and biding her time until Prince William decides if and when he will pop the question.
Rather than making the most of her precious 20s, this silly girl appears to be putting all her eggs into one unreliable basket and pathetically hanging around until William decides if he wants to marry her.
Is she straight out of a Jane Austen novel?
Last week Kate, 25, ditched her part-time job as an accessories buyer after apparently telling friends she needed more "me time".
How twee. How upper class and self-centred and, more alarmingly, how very 1950-ish.
It sounds to me as if she would not know how to do a decent day's work.
Kate was said to have taken the job with the London clothing store only because William was concerned she was starting to look very much like a WAG.
He had every reason to worry. The university graduate did appear to spend much of her time shopping or on holidays.
What a waste. Here is a young woman in the prime of her life with the world at her feet. She could enter any career where she cared to apply herself and put in some honest toil.
But what is the best she thinks she can achieve?
To land herself a Prince Charming and live happily ever after.
Dream on. She could have been a much-needed breath of fresh air for the British royal family.
I had high hopes for her. She seemed to be strong willed and not prepared to take any nonsense.
But instead, young Kate has become a carbon copy of a Victorian heroine whose life's ambition appears to be little more than to make a good match.
She has even angered palace insiders with her princess preparations.
Kate would have gained a little more respect from the sisterhood had she followed the lead of Chelsy Davy, who is said to have given long-time boyfriend Prince Harry the heave-ho.
It was the right decision. He missed her 22nd birthday party in favour of attending the rugby World Cup final.
Unacceptable - and smart and sassy Chelsy told Harry as much.
Perhaps she was never going to make a good royal bride.
Chelsy was a woman with her own mind.
Ironically, Kate's apparent motive in quitting her day job may just backfire if William thinks he is being pushed into a corner.
What if he doesn't want to marry Kate?
What if he is not ready to make a commitment?
Seems to me that Kate's actions smack of desperation.
What disappoints me is that middle-class Kate is allowing him to dictate the relationship rules.
Will he, or won't he and who cares?
If this young woman had any sense or self-esteem she would have told him what she wanted.
If he had not been prepared to meet her halfway, she would have been able to move on and not look back.
Instead, she seems to be at his every beck and call.
As if to prove the point, she finished her job on Thursday and flew off on yet another holiday on Friday.
The best advice she can take now is to develop the sense of community and responsibility that all good royals have had.
Kate should charge headlong into public service, pick a charity and make it work, like Princess Di and others.
