Americans can celebrate a holiday anywhere. If Thanksgiving is important to you why can't you celebrate it in Italy with your family if your all going to be there? It's not like it's a public thing. The tradition is usually to stay in the house, cook a big dinner and have everyone celebrate what they are thankful for together. Why can't you do that anywhere in the world if you want to? I remember an interview with Kate Bosworth when she was dating Orlando Bloom. She said her and her family were going to celebrate Thanksgiving in London because they would be there visiting Bloom's family.

BTW, the statement you quoted clearly says the kids were in the US.
