The supermodel is dead, says Claudia Schiffer

The supermodel is dead, says Claudia Schiffer

The age of the supermodel is over, according to Claudia Schiffer.
The 37-year-old beauty believes models can no longer achieve the kind of global celebrity she, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford enjoyed in the 1990s.
These days, singers and actresses are as likely to grace the covers of glossy magazines, preventing models from reaching star status, Miss Schiffer told an interviewer in her native Germany.

Claudia Schiffer: one of the five original supermodels, says the current generation of models are not major celebrities

"In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognise the girls.
"That is, for now, not possible, not least because the advertising industry is very much taken nowadays by popstars and actresses. Supermodels like we once were don't exist any more."
There are so many beautiful models around, it is almost impossible for a handful to become real celebrities, Miss Schiffer added in the magazine Fivetonine.

The original supermodels: From left to right: Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington

The model, who has a home in Suffolk-added: "I can remember when I needed four bodyguards to get backstage from a Chanel show just to my car. And that wasn't only me. It just isn't like this any more."
Miss Schiffer believes the Brazilian Gisele Bundchen is one of the few women to have supermodel status today.
"Her face is well known, her name is recognised - but no other girl occurs to me that people in the street would recognise," she said.
Claudia, who lives in the UK, has previously hit out at the trend towards super-thin models.

Gisele Bundchen: the only model that Claudia Schiffer currently acknowledges is a superstar

She told the magazine she was glad that their day in the spotlight seems to be receding towards a trend of "glamour and opulence."
She added. "I think and hope that there is a change in the scene, where glamour returns after heroin-chic and discusions about Anorexia.
"Current photo stories in magazines suggest it is going in this direction. Certainly the things I have done recently have been unusually glamorous and beautiful.
"Perhaps this new development can cause a revival of the supermodel as we embodied the image of beauty in the 90's."
She is happy to be working again with Karl Lagerfeld, the genius of Chanel, on a new ad campaign for champagne.

Gisele's typical and bland. Those supermodels, very much Amazonian, looked strong, powerful, and beautiful.

Gisele just wears bright coloured dresses with overstyled blonde hair. Boring and tacky. I laughed at her Bazaar's ed Lagerfeld shot of her in the white haute couture dresses.

She's just saying what most already knew. This isn't breaking news; by now, most have realized that models today are not the same as the models of yesterday.

I'm pretty sure everyone already knows or thinks this. Thank you for stating the obvious, Claudia.

Knowing the daily man - they probably cultivated it to appear like Claudia claimed the concept of supermodel has become redundant within this era; the reign of the super-model has ceased due to cultural reform and change in the social setting and dynamic; but there are still top models of the noughties: Carmen, Daria, Natalia, Giselle, Adrianna Lima, Angela Lindvall, Carolyn Murphy, Liya Kebede, to name but a few.

You're right about that. She makes herself look like she isn't able to analyze.

And she's wrong. Actually, I think she contradicts herself by hinting at what might happen in the future i.e. her 'glamorous' quote. The magazines have been trying to push the model agenda, and eventually it will work. It's starting to.

There's a typical Daily Mail follow up too. Everything they write seems so d*mn spiteful, misogynistic and calculated to whip up anger - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...n_page_id=1879

This piece is obviously designed to create outrage against the fashion industry and young models, overlooking the simple fact that the reason most models are young and thin is because most clothes look best on the young and thin. Ugh.

But how many people outside of the fashion world have ever heard of them? I know I wouldn't be able to recognize most of those models...

If Gisele is so bland why is it that anytime she is in a cover the sales rise an average of 15% or the best brands choose her and even use her name.. ex YSL manifesto... Dior, Louis Voiton, Valentino... the list goes on and on...

Claudia is nostagic of the time when people cared for who she was... times are different and she is not famous anymore...

Gisele does not behave like they did and she monopolizes the market now...I bet that if another great model showed up people would follow...

Does eanyone care for Gemma, Daria or Natalia...
They do not have sex apeal...they are truly bland... not much fun...already fading

Have you even looked at the old tachy ads from the ols super models... bright neon colors, strong lips... nothing there...but tooo much

It would have been funny to see Gisele if she was born when the others were and they were all out there... she would have made them desapear... with that body... and GOOD attitude - no drugs, no late arrivings, no diva like personality... She would have rulled all of them as she does today.

I don't think she's claiming she's the only one who's realised the "age of the supermodel" is over. She was probably just doing a regular talk about her career and then vs now and the Daily Mail did their usual bang up job grabbing a quote and running with it.

Of course, there will always be people at the top of the totem pole, but she's right that these girls are nowhere near as famous as she and her peers were or continue to be, unless you are very fashion involved.

Giselle, yes she's probably one of the most famous faces at the moment to the "general public" as it were but I'd also say that's more to do with her personal life and persona rather than explicitly her work.

I bet most people would have a much easier time recognizing Claudia than Daria, Gemma, Carmen etc. Even after all these years, she's more famous than them. Im not talking about fashion circles, im talking an average consumer. Someone was spot on on, that the originals had highly distinctive personality, they were quoted. Claudia was this nice, sexy, kind uber babe, Cindy was wholesome, athletic, high-achieving one, Naomi was a troublemaker, Linda was this wild, exotic, high-maintainance brat. Can anyone really describe even the most succesful runway model of now in terms of personality?
GIsele - fun, laughs a lot, likes to jog.
Adriana - fun, laughs a lot, smokes.
Snejana - gloomy, sad, smokes a lot.
These are just examples.

Agreed.

I love the new models, but they'll never have the fame/attitude that the Supers had... Doesn't mean that their work isn't great though.

i've been saying that for years... after the 90's, the supermodel term was just abused.

EXACTLY! She was talking candidly about the general public status of supermodels today, it is a true and valid point. It should be read in context, it wasn't a ''I am far superior and these girls could never reach my status'' comment, any implications of such is a short sighted view.
